The forum will be completed on May 7. [C] EUROPE[05] GREECE'S PARTICIPATION IN THE "EURO" IS A SIGNIFICANT SUCCESSWeb Posted: 16:57 GMT+2Brussels, 02/05/1998 (MPA) The historical summit meeting on the Economic and Monetary Union of Europe is being held in Brussels today overshadowed by the selection of the president of the European Central Bank.Greek minister of national economy and finance Yiannos Papantoniou characterized the ECOFIN's positive statement on the Greek economy as Greece's significant national success that will have as a result its participation in the single European currency. The council underlined the concrete progress achieved by Greece aimed at meeting the EU convergence criteria. The decision on the economic and monetary union of 11 from the 15 EU states will be reached this afternoon, while the exchange rates of the countries participating in the first phase of the EMU will be fixed this evening. In the first phase will not participate Britain, Sweden and Denmark because they do not want to and also Greece which is expected to participate in the EMU in the year 2001 as for the time being it does not meet any of the necessary criteria. [D] WORLD[06] ONLY 20% OF THE WORLD POPULATION LIVES IN COUNTRIES WITH FREE PRESSWeb Posted: 16:57 GMT+2Washington, 02/05/1998 (MPA) The annual Freedom House survey published to coincide with the May 3 Freedom of Press World Day mentions that only 20% of the world population live in countries with free press.Only one in five people has access to news and analysis that are not distorted or censored writes the author of the survey Leonard Sussman stressing that the harassment of journalists leads them to self-censorship. The survey that is being issued for the past 20 years ranks the mass media as "free", "partly free" and "not free". According to this year's survey, freedom of press have 67 of the 186 countries evaluated with a total population of 1,2 billion people namely, a percentage of 36%. In 54 countries (29%) with a population of 2,2 billion the mass media are characterized as "partly free", while in 65 countries (35%) with a population of 2,5 billion the printed and electronic press is "not free". According to the survey, 41 journalists were killed in 1997 ( 36 in 1996) , 35 were kidnapped or disappeared (47 in 1996), 310 were arrested or detained (372 in 1996), while 207 were physically assaulted (297 in 1996). [07] THE GREEK MINISTER OF DEVELOPMENT IS IN EGYPTWeb Posted: 16:57 GMT+2Cairo, 02/05/1998 (MPA) Greek minister of development Vaso Papandreou is on an official visit to Egypt heading a business delegation. The visit aims at strengthening the economic ties between Greece and Egypt.The Greek government minister will meet today with the Egyptian prime minister to discuss issues concerning new Greek investments and significant trade agreements. On Monday, the two countries will sign a protocol of cooperation in the sector of energy.
