[01] OLYMPIC AIRWAYS IN TURMOIL ONCE AGAIN

    Web Posted: 19:27 GMT+2
Athens, 26/04/1998 (MPA) The country's national air carrier Olympic Airways is once again in turmoil after its pilots embarked on an overtime ban that has led to daily flight cancellations and delays, crippling the company.

The pilots' union has so far indicated it will stick to its original strike plan and order one or more stoppages during the week, probably on Wednesday or Thursday. Transport and Communications Minister Tasos Mantelis said the government will not intervene in the operational and commercial plans of Olympic Airways.

The minister emphasized that the recently-approved law on restructuring and streamlining the airline must be implemented, and that the changes introduced to the bill at the last minute were made on the recommendation of the OA employees' unions. He urged pilots to sort out problems with management so that the carrier's operation could return to normal.

[02] GREECE AND FYROM ADOPT COMMON POSITION OVER KOSSOVO

    Web Posted: 19:27 GMT+2
Skopje, 26/04/1998 (MPA) Greek Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who met with his counterpart from FYROM Lazar Kitanovski, stated that both countries agree that borders in the Balkans should remain intact, and that a solution to the crisis should be sought through an immediate, unconditional start to talks between the two sides.

According to Mr. Tsochatzopoulos, the talks should aim to secure the greatest degree of autonomy feasible for Kosovo within the framework of the Yugoslav Federation. The Greek Defense Minister, who said Athens was willing to contribute to guaranteeing borders throughout the Balkans, stressed that inhabitants of the region had every reason to fear the crisis in Kosovo, and its repercussions.

[03] TWELVE YEARS SINCE THE CHERNOBYL ACCIDENT

    Web Posted: 19:27 GMT+2
Chernobyl, 26/04/1998 (MPA) Today marks the twelfth year anniversary since the formidable nuclear accident at Chernobyl in the Ukraine.

According to a score of pro-environment organizations, in spite of the deadly repercussions of that accident, no measures have been taken in order to permanently close the nuclear plant.
