    [01] STEPHANOPOULOS-TSOCHATZOPOULOS MEETING

    Minister of defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos will brief today president Kostis Stephanopoulos on the agreement concerning NATO's new command structure. The meeting takes place after yesterday's cabinet meeting.

    The prime minister called education minister Gerasimos Arsenis to bear his responsibilities and warned those disagreeing that he will not tolerate a similar behaviour again. The cabinet approved the way the minister of defense is handling the situation.

    [02] THE SAE ASSEMBLY MEETING CONCLUDES TODAY

    The proceedings of the Council of Hellenes Abroad, SAE, assembly meeting concludes in Thessaloniki today.

    The issues that are being examined today are the eternal principles of the Greek civilization and the Olympic ideal, the return of the Greeks living abroad to their fatherland and the young Greeks abroad, their identity, multi-cultural education and activities.

    The delegates will also approve a resolution strongly condemning the Turkish threats of war in case Cyprus becomes a member of the European Union.

    [03] VENIZELOS: GREECE IS A CULTURAL SUPERPOWER

    Greece is a cultural superpower in the universe of civilization, stated today culture minister Evangelos Venizelos speaking in the Council of Hellenes Abroad, SAE, assembly meeting. Mr.Venizelos stated that Greece should not limit its culture within the boundaries set by the Greek language. He also referred to the Cultural Olympiad and stated that it will not be the cultural decoration of the Olympic Games but an independent institution.

    Mr.Venizelos stated that within the framework of the Cultural Olympiad the priorities of the culture ministry will be the promotion of the Orthodox dimension of the year 2000 and the exploitation of the big opportunity offered by the Sidney Olympic Games that will be held on the same year, where the Greek participation will be intense and special.

    The culture minister defined the four axes of the policy that will be followed in the Cultural Olympiad namely, the culture of peace, the culture of social cohesion, the information society and finally, culture as a meeting point of tradition and innovation. He also referred to the need for the establishment of a new international non governmental organization, having Greece as a permanent reference point, and stressed UNESCO's participation in this effort.

    Deputy foreign minister Giorgos Papandreou pointed out the need to support a multi-cultural model of society and referred to Greece as a superpower in the sector of culture, while he also spoke about the issue of the Olympiad, saying that the policy followed in order to win the hosting of the 2004 Olympic Games was an emotional one. He said that the Olympic Games in Greece will be an opportunity to promote significant values and referred to the effort for the revival of the Olympic truce. He also stressed that it will be an opportunity to return to the eternal values.

    University of Europe president Eleni Glikatzi-Arveler underlined that our "only Empire is culture" and referred to an incident with the late French president Francois Mitterand, who had spoken of a Greek Empire. Ms.Arveler underlined that "when you are a Greek, you are born almost civilized".

    [04] MINISTER OF MACEDONIA-THRACE WILL VISIT THE UNITED STATES

    Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Philippos Petsalnikos leaves tomorrow for the United States at the invitation of the federal service of information, USAI. According to his schedule he will visit Washington, Boston and New York from December 6 to 16.

    During his three-day visit to Washington, Mr.Petsalnikos will visit the State Department and will meet with members of the US Congress International Relations Committee.

    [05] KAKLAMANIS MET WITH THE ALBANIAN PARLIAMENTARY PRESS COMMITTEE

    The need for a timely enactment of a healthy framework for the operation of the mass media and mainly the electronic media, that will contribute to the smooth democratization of Albania, was pointed out by Greek Parliament president Apostolos Kaklamanis in his meeting with members of the Albanian Parliamentary Press Committee.

    Mr.Kaklamanis referred to the great influence of television and underlined that there is a risk of a negative climate in the social and democratic life of a country in case television is in the wrong hands.

    He used as an example the case of the Imia islets in the Aegean, saying that tension was created for profit making purposes by the Greek and Turkish television channels.

    [06] THE PRESIDENT OF THE GREEK-AMERICAN INSTITUTE CALLS ON THE US TO CHANGE ITS POLICY TOWARD ANKARA

    President of the Greek-American Institute Evgenios Rossidis with a letter addressed to US president Bill Clinton suggests that the US policy toward Ankara must change in order for Turkey to cooperate constructively in the solution of the Cyprus issue.

    In the letter that was sent on the occasion of the meeting of US president Clinton with Turkish prime minister Mesut Yilmaz, that will take place in Washington on December 19, it is mentioned among others that many members of the Greek-American community are disappointed with the US policy regarding the situation in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

    [07] WASHINGTON: TURKEY SHOULD BECOME AN EU MEMBER

    US president Bill Clinton reiterated Washington's position that Turkey should become an EU member, during his meeting in the White House with the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission.

    The European leaders made it clear that Turkey is considered a European state but does not meet the necessary pre-conditions in the sectors of the economy and human rights in order to be admitted to the EU. They also stressed that Ankara must state that it accepts the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
