    [01] TIGHT ECONOMIC POLICY FOR 1998

    Minister of National Economy and Finance Yiannos Papantoniou announced a tight economic policy for 1998.

    The governmental committee approved unanimously yesterday the main points of the new budget. According to information, it decided on smaller wage increases than those previously announced informally, while at the same time, it also decided on the cancellation of the taxation limit increase.

    The taxation scale, that will be based on the inflation rate, is expected to be set at 5,7%.

    [02] SIMITIS WILL VISIT LONDON AND PARIS

    Prime Minister Kostas Simits will visit Britain and France before the end of the month.

    Mr.Simitis will leave for London on November 26 to meet with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and other political figures. On November 30, the Greek Prime Minister will leave for Paris where he is scheduled to stay until December 3 and during that time he will meet with his French counterpart Lionel Jospen.

    Earlier, in mid November, mr.Simitis will be in Luxembourg to attend the special EU meeting on employment.

    [03] THE GREEK PARLIAMENT PRESIDENT WILL VISIT GERMANY

    Greek Parliament President Apostolos Kaklamanis will be in Germany tomorrow for a five-day visit at the invitation of his counterpart in the German Federal Parliament Rita Suessmuth and presidents of regional Parliaments.

    Mr.Kaklamanis will visit Munich, Bonn, Stuttgard and Berlin. He is scheduled to have talks with leading politicians both at a federal and a state level on issues of bilateral and wider interest.

    [04] HALBROOKE WILL VISIT CYPRUS

    US presidential envoy to Cyprus Richard Halbrooke will be in Nicosia on Monday and Tuesday for separate meetings with Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    US government officials have stated that they do not expect those talks to lead to a quick solution of the Cyprus problem.

    Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz will meet with US President Bill Clinton at the White House in December.

    [05] YUGOSLAVIA FOLLOWS THE SPIRIT OF THE INTER-BALKAN SUMMIT

    The federal government of Yugoslavia, that met under Prime Minister Kondic, adopted the report that was submitted by Foreign Minister Miludinovic on the outcome of the Inter-Balkan Summit in Crete.

    The government concluded that the Summit, the first of its kind in the history of the Balkans, was successful not only for the future of the Balkan states but for Europe's as well.

    [06] THE GREEK-TURKISH DIFFERENCES CAN BE SETTLED ONLY THROUGH NEGOTIATIONS

    Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz in an interview to an Austrian newspaper appeared threatening maintaining that if the European Union starts negotiations for Cyprus' accession only with the Greek Cypriots then the island's division will be final.

    Referring to the Greek Turkish differences, mr.Yilmaz stated that they can be resolved only through negotiations and stressed that neither Turkey nor Greece will be able to withstand a war.

    [07] KASOULIDES: THE HALBROOKE VISIT HAS NO RELATION WITH THE CYPRIOT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

    Cypriot Foreign Minister Yiannakis Kasoulides stressed that the visit of US envoy Richard Halbrooke to Cyprus should not be seen as a move related with the upcoming presidential elections.

    Speaking to reporters, mr.Kasoulides stated that it is likely that mr.Halbrooke is very close to a decision on the way he will be involved in the solution of the Cyprus problem.

    When called to comment on the statements of the Cypriot opposition parties according to which, the Halbrooke visit is a US intervention in Cyprus' internal affairs, mr.Kasoulides responded that the US official had stated his intention to visit Cyprus since September.

    [08] CHINA WILL MAKE EFFORTS FOR THE SOLUTION OF THE CYPRUS PROBLEM

    Chinese Culture Minister Liu Zhongde stated that his country, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, will make efforts for the solution of the Cyprus problem. The statements were made after the signing of the 7th Programme of the Cultural Cooperation between Cyprus and China.

    Mr.Zhongde also stressed that the Chinese government believes that the sovereignty, the territorial integrity and the non-aligned status of Cyprus must be respected, while he underlined the strong interest of the Chinese people in the solution of the Cyprus problem.

    [09] THE EURO-MEDITERRANEAN AUDIO-VISUAL CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 14-15

    The first high level meeting between 27 governmental delegations from the countries that have signed the Barcelona declaration and representatives of the wider region's audio-visual industry will be held in Thessaloniki on November 14-15 aimed at the materialization of the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in the audio-visual sector.

    The initiative belongs to the Italian Foreign Ministry and has the support of Greece, France and Spain. A leading role will be played by the COPEAM professional organization.

    [10] CLINTON SUBMITTED A REPORT ON CYPRUS TO THE US CONGRESS

    Richard Halbrooke's appointment and the invitation issued by UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan to the leaders of the two sides in Cyprus for the opening of direct talks, are for US President Bill Clinton the two most significant developments in the period of June 1-July 31, 1997, regarding the Cyprus issue.

    In a report that he submitted yesterday to the US Congress, the US President maintains that mr.Halbrooke's appointment proves the US commitment to help in the promotion of a final political settlement for Cyprus.

    Regarding the UN Secretary-General invitation for the opening of direct talks, mr.Clinton reiterates in his report the comment made by UN Secretary- General special adviser Diego Kordovez according to which, the friendly atmosphere between the two sides in the talks they had in the United States was a good start for the negotiation meetings that will follow.
