    [01] SIMITIS: FOUR AXES OF DEVELOPMENT IN NORTH-WESTERN GREECE

    Greece's participation in the European economic and monetary union on equal terms is not being enforced or made following external orders but it is a national choice of strategic importance, stressed Prime Minister Kostas Simitis speaking in the city of Kozani.

    Mr.Simitis announced the four basic axes of development which are, modernization, the completion of the transport and telecommunications infrastructure under construction, the transformation of the region into an energy junction and the support and development of all sectors of production.

    The Prime Minister stated in the city of Florina, one of his stops in his tour of north-western Greece, that the goal of the Greek government is to contribute to the creation of a climate of economic development, cooperation and progress in the Balkans.

    [02] GREEK INFORMATION CAMPAIGN ON THE TURKISH PROVOCATION

    The Greek government decided to launch an international information campaign on the recent Turkish provocation, presenting to NATO and the European Union all the facts regarding the harassment by Turkish fighter jets of the Greek transport plane carrying Greek Minister of Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos.

    Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz stated that he is ready to negotiate a fair solution to the Greek-Turkish problems.

    [03] THE METROPOLITE OF MINSK IS VISITING THESSALONIKI

    Metropolite of Minsk, Filaretos characterized Thessaloniki as the Golden Gate of Christianity and a Metropolis of Orthodoxy, stressing that this can be proven by historical facts.

    Metropolite Filaretos, who attended the international conference "Christian Thessaloniki - A city where East meets the West", referring to the situation of the Christian Orthodox Church after the collapse of the former Soviet Union, said that the Church has maintained its unity. He said that it has no borders and reminded that the Russian Orthodox Church had and still has a multi-ethnic character as it stretches over the former Soviet Union territory.

    [04] ECONOMIC COOPERATION AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED BY GREECE AND SLOVAKIA

    Favorable prospects are being opened for the economic and technological cooperation between Greece and Slovakia after the agreement signed in Athens yesterday by Undersecretary of National Economy Alexandros Baltas and his Slovak counterpart. The two Undersecretaries also discussed issues concerning the time of the establishment of the first Greek-Slovak joint ministerial committee.

    At the moment there are just 14 Greek investments in Slovakia mainly in the sector of services, estimated at about 17 million US dollars.

    [05] MEMBERS OF THE PARLIAMENTARY GROUP OF GERMAN-GREEK FRIENDSHIP WILL VISIT GREECE

    The members of the Parliamentary Group of German-Greek Friendship will arrive in Greece tomorrow and their visit will last until October 24.

    The Parliament deputies will arrive in Thessaloniki tomorrow at noon and on Monday they will meet with Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Philippos Petsalnikos. In the afternoon of the same day they will be in Athens to meet with Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and political party leaders.

    [06] THE SECOND ROUND OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS WILL BE HELD IN MONTENEGRO TOMORROW

    The second round of presidential elections will be held in Montenegro tomorrow between the two candidates who got the most votes in the first round held on October 5, namely incumbent President Momir Bulatovic and Prime Minister Milo Juganovic.

    The two candidates almost got the 50% of the votes needed to be elected to the presidency in the first round, as Bulatovic got about 49% compared to the 48% of his rival Juganovic. The other 5 candidates managed to get a very small percentage of the votes.

    [07] ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW WILL BE IN THE USA TOMORROW

    Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will have meetings with US President Bill Clinton, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and other government officials during his visit to the United States.

    The visit of the Ecumenical Patriarch, that begins tomorrow, is the first one he makes to the USA after his election to the ecumenical throne of Orthodoxy and it is regarded as very significant.
