    [01] THE IMPROVEMENT OF GREEK-ALBANIAN RELATIONS IS BEING ACCELERATED

    The improvement of the Greek-Albanian relations is being stepped up. Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos delivered to his Albanian counterpart Paskal Milo a 2 billion drachmas cheque in economic aid as an assistance for the immediate operation of the Albanian state.

    Also, loans of up to 18 billion drachmas will be granted soon to be used for the construction of public works in Albania, while the Parliament will ratify soon the friendship and cooperation treaty signed by the two countries

    [02] GREECE RATIFIED THE TREATY FOR THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN

    Greece has ratified the Council of Europe Treaty for the rights of children in court procedures and Ambassador Dimitris Konstas, permanent representative of Greece in the Council of Europe, has already delivered the ratification documents to the organization's Secretary-General in Strasbourg.

    The treaty enacts ways for the exercise of the rights of children in family disputes, such as information, expression of opinion etc. either directly or through representatives (individuals or organizations).

    Each state determines at least three categories of family disputes to which the articles of the treaty will be applied such as, guardianship of children, residence, healthcare, protection from inhumane or humiliating treatment, adoption, restriction of parental authority, etc.

    Three more states have to ratify the treaty before it is put into force. Until now it has been ratified by 10 Council of Europe member-states namely, Italy, France, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia

    [03] MEMORIAL WEEK FOR THE JEWS OF THESSALONIKI

    The events that will be held within the framework of the Memorial Week, in honor of the Jewish community in Thessaloniki, will open on Sunday, Sept.14.

    The Memorial Week proves the long historical relation between Thessaloniki and the Jewish community, as before WWII the city had one of the most active and prosperous Jewish communities in the Balkans.

    In the events will participate distinguished Israeli artists representing different tendencies in the contemporary culture of Israel.

    [04] LOCAL ELECTIONS ARE BEING HELD IN BOSNIA

    Polling stations have opened in Bosnia today for the local elections that will be completed tomorrow.

    The hard-line nationalists from all three sides in the region are threatening to boycott the elections, while the OSCE observers are not in a position to confirm if elections will be held in the towns of Brecko and Mostar

    [05] BULGARIA PRESENTED ITS CANDIDATURE FOR THE CENTRAL-EUROPEAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT

    Bulgarian President Ivan Kostov formally presented the country's candidature for membership in the Central-European Free Trade Agreement, CEFTA. The presentation was made within the framework of the meeting of the prime ministers of the CEFTA members in Slovenia.

    In his speech mr.Kostov underlined that the 6 member-states namely, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia and Romania are Bulgaria's traditional trade partners and added that the new reality that has been formed in Europe and in his country naturally leads to the idea of a new development in the trade-economic relations based on the rules of the market and the common economic benefit.

    [06] CYPRUS' EU ACCESSION COURSE WILL BE DISCUSSED ON MONDAY

    Discussion on Cyprus' EU accession course will be held next Monday within the framework of the EU Foreign Ministers' meeting in Brussels.

    According to a representative of Luxembourg, which is currently holding the rotating EU presidency, the discussion will take place during the ministers' dinner after a request made by Greece.

    It is regarded as certain that an intervention will be made by Foreign Minister of Luxembourg Jacques Poos, who is currently holding the Presidency of the EU Foreign Ministers' Council.

    [07] THE FUNERAL OF MOTHER TERESA IS BEING HELD TODAY

    Calcutta 13 September (MPA)

    Mother Teresa will be buried today with honors reserved for a head of state. Her open coffin, on the same gun-carriage that carried the body of Mahadma Gandi, passed through the streets of Calcutta as a last tribute to the memory of the "saint of the poor".

    The funeral of Mother Teresa will be attended by heads of states and monarchs, as well as by a huge crowd of people estimated at 1,5 million.
