    The course of the economy and next year's budget was the main points of discussion in today's meeting between Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and Minister of Finance and National Economy Yiannos Papantoniou.

    As it was made known, the government's economic staff rules out the likelihood of new general taxes but is examining the increase of taxes imposed on state bonds and interest-bearing bills, while the increase of the objective value of real estate has already been announced.

    The ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense Theodoros Pangalos and Akis Tsochatzopoulos held a meeting today in the Foreign Ministry building in Athens with the participation of staff members from both ministries.

    In statements he made after the meeting, mr.Pangalos pointed out that they discussed the recent developments in the Cyprus issue, the Greek-Turkish relations, Greece's activities within the framework of NATO and OSCE and the prospects of international defense cooperation in the Balkans and the region of Caucasus.

    Mr.Pangalos also announced that in the summit meeting of Balkan leaders that will be held in Crete next month, there will be a meeting of the Prime Ministers of Greece and Turkey.

    Regarding Cyprus' accession into the European Union mr.Pangalos and mr.Tsochatzopoulos underlined that it will take place as scheduled and that accession negotiations will start in April of 1998.

    On the issue of the Russian S-300 missiles, mr.Tsochatzopoulos said that they are defense systems, stating that if a country is denied of its right to reinforce its defense then it is left unprotected to the war aspirations against it. Finally, the two ministers stressed that Turkey is the one hurling threats of war which go against the spirit of the Madrid agreement.

    [03] UNPUBLISHED POEMS OF KAVAFIS WERE TRANSLATED INTO THE ALBANIAN LANGUAGE

    The Association of Authors and Artists in Albania organized an event in Tirana for the presentation of a book with poems of Greek poet Konstantionos Kavafis translated into the Albanian language.

    The publication of this bilingual volume had the financial support of the Greek Culture Ministry and the Association of Exporters in Northern Greece. It is made up of three sections that include published and unpublished poems.

    The translation was made by mr.Luan Zyka, a professor in the University of Agronomy in Tirana, who is a graduate of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Department of Agronomy.

    [04] CLINTON: THE OLYMPIC GAMES HAD TO RETURN TO THEIR PLACE OF ORIGIN

    US President Bill Clinton congratulated the people of Greece and especially the people of Athens for being the hosts of the Olympic Games of the year 2004.

    According to the statement made by the US White House spokesman on behalf of the US President, the Olympic Games of the next millennium had to return to their place of origin.

    Greek Prime Minister Mr. Constantinos Simitis received today the Minister of Interior, Public Administration and Decentralization Mr. Alexandros Papadopoulos with whom he examined the bill for the joining of the small country communities into bigger municipalities.

    The bill will be presented in the cabinet on Friday and the Interior vice- minister Mr.Papademas expressed today his satisfaction for the way the bill goes on.

    [06] THE GREEK GOVERNMENT HAS TO RESPOND TO THREATS MADE AGAINST THE STATUS QUO IN CYPRUS

    Greece can not remain silent to messages or threats concerning the change of the status quo in the Aegean and Cyprus, stated Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas referring to the statements of the US State Department spokesman, who expressed discontent regarding the position adopted by Prime Minister Kostas Simitis that any threat against Cyprus coming from Turkey constitutes a cause of war for Greece.

    The Greek government spokesman stated that Greece respects the international law and agreements contrary to the policy followed by Turkey. He said that Ankara's position creates problems and does not allow progress to be achieved in the Greek-Turkish relations based on the Madrid agreement.

    [07] 25 CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS ARE UNDERWAY IN BALKAN COUNTRIES

    Greek firms of constructors have undertaken to carry out 25 construction projects in Balkan and Black Sea countries, while there is great interest in the participation of Greek consortiums to the construction of road networks in Balkan countries.

    The above were stated by Greek Minister of Environment and Public Works mr.Kostas Laliotis after the separate meetings he had with his counterparts from Ukraine, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Albania, FYROM and Bulgaria.

    [08] THE ASSOCIATIONS OF GREEK AND ROMANIAN BANKS SIGNED A MEMORANDUM OF COOPERATION

    The Association of Greek Banks signed a memorandum of cooperation with the respective Romanian Association.

    In the memorandum the two sides declare their wish to expand their cooperation in banking sectors such as, capital market, banking marketing, banking checks, credit risks etc, while, advisory services will be offered aimed at the modernization of the Romanian banking system.

    Senior officials of the Association of Greek Banks have already visited the respective Bank Associations in Slovenia, Croatia, Moldavia, Albania and Hungary.

    The Presidents of Bulgaria and Romania Petar Stoyanov and Emil Constantinescu are undertaking a joint initiative for the solution of the Greek-Turkish differences.

    According to the Turkish news agency "ANADOLU", sources close to the Bulgarian President have stated that the two presidents have already started preparations for a 4-day summit meeting and next week formal proposals will be submitted to Athens and Ankara.

    The same officials mentioned that mr.Stoyanov and mr.Constantinescu intend to have separate meetings with President of Greece Kostis Stephanopoulos and President of Turkey Suleiman Demirel to discuss the views of both countries before trying to persuade them to hold a meeting.

    [10] THE US RECOGNIZE THE GOVERNMENT OF NICOSIA AS THE LEGAL GOVERNMENT OF CYPRUS

    The US government kept its distance from the statements made by Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini on Cyprus, which were repeated during his visit to Washington.

    US State Department spokesman Jim Foley reiterated Washington's position that the United States recognize the government of Nicosia as the only legitimate government of Cyprus and continue to support the UN efforts for a solution based on a two-zone and two-community federation.

    The Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipe line will be built and solutions will be found for every problem, stated to MPA the director of the Bulgarian Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works mr.Konstantin Tauchanov, commenting on the problems that have been created due to the disagreements among the parties involved regarding the percentage of their participation in the project.

    According to mr.Tauchanov, the delays in the construction and operation of the pipe line stem from the inability of Russia to guarantee the volume of oil that will be carried through it.

    He also characterized as very significant for Bulgaria the opening of the Egnatia road network and stated that it will help to the transportation of about 10 million tons of raw material to Greece, Bulgaria and Romania.

    Referring to the 62nd International Trade fair of Thessaloniki mr.Tauchanov stated that it is one of the best events of its kind, partly due to the fact that it is accompanied by a conference on technical works which operates as a forum for the exchange of views and cooperation.
