Greece's Foreign Undersecretary Yiannos Kranidiotis met with his Libyan counterpart Abdelati el Obeidi in Athens yesterday, where the two men discuss the forthcoming meeting of the joint Greece-Libya committee for bilateral cooperation.

Following the talks, Mr. Kranidiotis stated that a Libyan committee is to visit Greece in September in order to explore possibilities for closer cooperation in the economic, transport and trade sectors.

Mr. el Obeidi stated that he briefed Mr. Kranidiotis on the difficulties faced by his country after the sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council, following the Lockerbie incident in 1988, when 270 persons where killed in a bombing of a Pan Am airliner over Scotland.

A lengthy international investigation had concluded that Libya was behind that attack.

Moreover, the Libyan Minister stressed that his country "is supportive of Cyprus' independence, the freedom of its territory and the special role it can play in the region." .
