    [01] GREECE ACQUIRES NINE MORE MUILTPLE LAUNCHES ROCKET SYSTEMS

    Thessaloniki, August 3 (MPA)

    The Greek Army has acquired nine more multiple launches rocket systems, (MLRS) which were unveiled to the Minister of National Defense Akis Tsochatzopoulos in Thessaloniki yesterday.

    The first nine MLRS had been purchased by Greece from the United States in 1995 and, following this week's order, the shipment will be completed within the next few weeks.

    MLRS is the most advanced system in the world and the one most frequently purchased by NATO.

    The Greek Denfense Minister added that "Greece will defend its historic rights, its sovereignty and its national independence."

    Responding to reporters' questions regarding Greek-Turkish relations, Mr. Tsochatzopoulos said that he does not expect new crises in the Aegean and, in regarda to Turkey's behavior, he stated that "I haven't any comment to make. Turkey's stance is a matter of its own. We have clearly stated the framework on which we operate strategically. Beyond that, statements of positive intent and the acceptance and maintenance of principles is a positive element, but it does remain to be seen in action."

    [02] GREEK TROOPS RETURN FROM ALBANIA

    Thessaloniki, August 3 (MPA)

    The main part of the Greek battalion assigned to Albania (278 troops and 91 vehicles) arrived at the port of Thessaloniki today, where the Minister of National Defence Akis Tsochatzopoulos and other military leaders welcomed them with a formal ceremony.

    In his address, Mr. Tsochatzopoulos expressed his gladness that all the men returned safe and congratulated them for completing their mission in the neighbouring country.

    [03] GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER TO TRAVEL TO ALBANIA NEXT TUESDAY

    Athens, August 3 (MPA)

    Greece's Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and under-secretary of Foreign Affairs Yiannos Kranidiotis are to travel to Tirana on Tuesday, August 5, in order to embark on contacts with the newly-elected Albanian government.

    Accompanying Mr. Pangalos will be the Minister of Public Order George Romeos and Labour Miltiadis Papaioannou, who will meet with their Albanian counterparts in order to discuss the issue of the Albanian escaped who have entered Greece.

    [04] GATSIOUDIS IN THE JAVELIN THROWING FINALS

    Greece's javelin thrower Kostas Gatsioudis qualified for Tuesday night's finals when, today, he achieved a throw of 84.32 meters.

    In the long jump, Kostas Koukodimos was excluded from the finals, scoring a jump of 7.87 meters, falling short of the 8.05 meters limit.

    [05] TWO ALBANIANS KILLED AT YUGOSLAV BORDERS

    Belgrade, August 3 (MPA)

    Two Albanians from Kossovo were killed and another was injured during an episode that occurred on August 1 at the Yugoslav-Albanian borders.

    According to the official report, the three Albanians were seen by the Yugoslav guards trying to cross the border. The guards ordered them to stop but, instead, the Albanians opened fire.
