    [01] PRIVATE ELECTRICITY COMPANIES WILL OPERATE IN GREECE AFTER THE YEAR 2001

    In four years the State Electricity Company in Greece will lose its monopoly in electricity production as private companies will also be allowed to be active in this profitable sector. The decision was reached yesterday after the unanimous approval of a proposal submitted by Minister of Development Vaso Papandreou.

    According to the Greek government spokesman, the drawing up of a legislative framework for the operational reorganization of the State Electricity Company will be completed by the end of 1997.

    The industrial production index remained unchanged in the first five months of 1997 compared to the same period last year.

    According to experts, this was the result of the negative development in the month of May when the industrial production index dropped by 3%.

    The Macedonian Press Agency is the umbilical cord that links the Greeks living abroad with the motherland and plays a very significant role in the continuous updating of the mass media that inform the Greek communities abroad. This conclusion was reached by the participants in the 7th World Conference of the Pan-Macedonian Associations that ended yesterday.

    Meanwhile, the Presidents of the Pan-Macedonian Associations announced that a World Pan-Macedonian Association will be founded and its seat is likely to be in Thessaloniki.

    [04] PANGALOS-KASOULIDES MEETING ON THE ISSUE OF CYPRUS

    Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos and his Cypriot counterpart Yiannakis Kasoulides speculated that the solution of the Cyprus problem is likely, but they pointed out that the Turkish intransigence does not leave room for optimism.

    In the meeting special attention was given to the strategy and tactic that will be followed in the second round of talks between Cypriot President Clerides and Turkish-Cypriot leader Denktash that will be held in Switzerland on August 11.

    [05] THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN SERBIA WILL BE HELD ON SEPTEMBER 21

    The presidential and parliamentary elections in Serbia will be held on September 21. The Socialist Party candidate in the presidential elections will be Zoran Lilic, according to a decision reached by the party's central committee.

    The presidential elections in Serbia were called earlier than scheduled as a result of Slobodan Milosevic's election to the yugoslav Presidency.
