EUROPEWeb Posted: 16:33 GMT+2Thessaloniki 28 June (MPA)General Directors and Chief Editors of the 50 most important Balkan mass media are to meet in the sea resort of Agia Triada near Thessaloniki on June 30 and July 1, within the framework of the conference "Peace and Development in Southeastern Europe: the role of the mass media", an event organized by the Macedonian Press Agency, while the co-organizer is the Cultural Capital of Europe Organization - Thessaloniki '97.This significant two-day event will be declared open by Minister of Transport and Communications Haris Kastanides and Minister of Macedonia- Thrace Philippos Petsalnikos, while General Secretary of the Ministry of Press and Media Yiannis Nikolaou will close the conference. In the conference will participate the directors of the largest newspapers in the Balkans, as well as the directors of all the state news agencies in the region and the most important state and private television and radio stations from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, FYROM, Romania, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Slovenia and Turkey. Also, in the conference will participate the directors and chief editors of the largest Greek mass media and representatives from the Greek Federation of Journalists' Unions, the Association of Daily Newspapers Journalists of Macedonia-Thrace and the Association of Daily Newspapers Journalists of Athens, as well as Greek music composer Yiannis Markopoulos known for his work in the Balkans. After the end of the conference, there will be a meeting of the Association of Balkan News Agencies, ABNA, which will be held in the afternoon of July 1 with the participation of the General Directors of the Balkan news agencies. According to him, mr.Yilmaz is more experienced politician than Tansu Ciller and is highly respected inside the country and abroad.Referring to Bulent Etsevit and Husametin Cintoruk, both destined to become vice-presidents in a Yilmaz government which is expected to win a confidence vote in Parliament, he said that they are good persons, have political experience and put words into practice, therefore, they are a good choise for vice-presidents in a new government. [D] WORLD[10] THE US CONGRESS ADOPTED A RESOLUTION ON CYPRUSWeb Posted: 16:33 GMT+2Washington 28 June (MPA)The US House of Representatives International Relations Committee unanimously adopted a resolution calling US President Bill Clinton to make all the necessary moves for the solution of the Cyprus problem. The resolution had been tabled on May 15 by the Committee Chairman, Ben Gilman.Specifically, mr.Gilman had stated that the Cyprus problem is an issue of concern for the US Congress for over 22 years and is a situation that calls for an end to the occupation of Cyprus by foreign troops. He also said that even though the world has dramatically changed to the better, Cyprus remains a pressing international problem and an example of intransigence in diplomacy. Mr.Gilman stated that the US government should invest part of its prestige to an effort for the solution of the problem, because the Americans have always supported justice and also, because they have important interests that will be affected from instability in Cyprus.
