[04] CONSTANTINESCU: NEW DIMENSIONS CAN BE ADDED TO THE GREEK-ROMANIAN RELATIONSWeb Posted: 14:57 GMT+2Thessaloniki 24 May (MPA)Issues concerning the further development of the relations between northern Greece and Romania were discussed in Thessaloniki this morning by Romanian President Emil Constantinescu and Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Philippos Petsalnikos.The Romanian President stated to journalists after the meeting that he was very happy to be in Thessaloniki because, as he said, the city is a trade and economic axis that links the north with the south, while he added that the traditionally good Greek-Romanian relations can acquire new dimensions at a political, economic and cultural level. Mr.Constantinescu also underlined that the development of the trade and economic transactions between Greece and Romania will be for the benefit of both countries. He said that for the development of those transactions good information is necessary and therefore, Romania supports the founding of an Information Office in Thessaloniki, while it backs the establishment of a similar Greek office in Bucharest. The Romanian President also referred to the development of Free Trade zones such as those in Constanza and the Danube, where Greek communities live since a long time ago and have contributed to the development of relations between the two countries. At this point, he stressed that Romania supports the Greek community living in its territory and this is obvious by the fact that it was granted the right to elect a representative to the Romanian Parliament. Mr.Constantinescu also said that he discussed with mr.Petsalnikos the establishment of a road axis that will link the Baltic states with the city of Alexandroupolis in north-eastern Greece. He said that already has discussed this issue with the President of Moldavia and with government ministers from other countries, such as Denmark, and based on the outcome of those discussions it was established that there is interest coming from the Baltic states. Responding to questions made by reporters, he said that Romania is ready to become a NATO member undertaking all responsibilities that stem from this membership. Mr.Constantinescu said that Romania has already answered this question with its participation in the multi-national forces deployed in Bosnia and Albania, pointing out that the Greek and the Romanian forces have an excellent cooperation in the region around Gjirokastra in Albania. Mr.Constantinescu reminded that he has already thanked Greece for its support in the efforts of his country to become a member of NATO and the European Union. He also added that Romania is a factor of stability and security and therefore it meets all the preconditions for becoming a NATO member. From his side, mr.Petsalnikos stated that the establishment of an Information Office in Thessaloniki will give the opportunity to the Greek business world to know more about the reforms taking place in the Romanian economy and investments. He also said that he discussed with the Romanian President issues concerning the visits of business delegations from northern Greece to Romania and the cooperation potential in the sectors of education and culture at the level of universities. [05] FYROM WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE BALKAN FOREIGN MINISTERS CONFERENCE IN THESSALONIKIWeb Posted: 14:57 GMT+2Skopje 24 May (MPA)FYROM's Foreign Minister Ljubomir Frckowski, in an interview published today in the newspaper "Dnevnik", announced that his country will participate in the Balkan Foreign Ministers Conference that will be held in Thessaloniki.Mr.Frckowski stated that he does not expect this conference to bring about significant changes but it will be a step forward, stressing that his country has always backed the initiatives for cooperation in the Balkans. [06] ALBRIGHT: PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN THE GREEK-TURKISH RELATIONSWeb Posted: 14:57 GMT+2Washington 24 May (MPA)US Secretary of State ms.Albright, in a news conference held before her departure for Europe, speculated that there has been progress in the Greek- Turkish relations.Ms.Albright said that certain positive steps have been made regarding the improvement of the relations between Greece and Turkey and expressed the hope that this course will continue because both countries are very important NATO allies. Referring to the Cyprus problem, she reiterated that it is a priority for the United States and added that this year a solution procedure must be promoted.
