[02] BELGIUM'S NATIONAL BANK: GREECE'S EMU PROGRESS IS NOTEWORTHYWeb Posted: 19:40 GMT+2Brussels, May 18 (MPA)Most of the Euroepan Union's member-states are in better economic form than what was expected from them, stated the governor of Belgium's National Bank Alfons Verplaetse, who aslo stated that the indications for Greece and Italy are quite positive, two countries which -as he stated- were considered to be the EU"s "black sheep".He added that while Greece was late for two years in applying the measures necesary to achieve convergence with the Economic Monetary Union, it has achieved noteworthy progress in relation to the expectations. [B] BALKANS[05] GREEK OFFICERS PARTICIPATE IN BULGARIA-HELD NATO EXERCISEWeb Posted: 19:40 GMT+2Sofia, May 18 (MPA)Officers and experts from eight counries are participating in NATO's exercise "Eagle of Peace '97", curently held at Bulgaria's Military Academy.The exercise, to be completed on May 22, features participants from Greece, the United States, Turkey, Romania, Italy, FYROM, Albania and Bulgaria. According to Bulgaria's Defense Minister Georgi Ananief, the exercise is held within the framework of NATO's initiative "Cooperation for Peace" and is expected to aid in Bulgaria's accession to the European and north- Atlantic structures. [06] ALBANIA: OPPOSITION PARTIES CONTINUE TO THREATEN BOYCOTT OF ELECTIONSWeb Posted: 19:40 GMT+2Tirana, May 18 (MPA)Albania's opposition parties continue to react to the new election law recently voted in their country's parliament, which is overwhelmingly in favor of President Sali Berisha's Democratic Party.The opposition threatens to boycott the elections scheduled for June 29 if the President insists on his positions. Meanwhile, Mr. Berisha has already embarked on his pre-election campaign, currently at the small town of Laci, 30 kilometers north from Tirana. At the same time, the United States and other countries in Western Europe have expressed their concern over the mounting reactions. A.F.
