    [01] VENIZELOS: THE CULTURAL CAPITAL EVENTS MUST BE PROMOTED AND BE OF HIGH QUALITY

    The events held within the framework of the Cultural Capital of Europe must have a high quality. They must be promoted and attract the largest possible audience, while they also must have a meaning for the European and the Greek culture as well as, for the special character of the city of Thessaloniki, stated Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos.

    Mr.Venizelos described as great danger the large number of cultural events and referring to the cancellation of 235 of them, he stated that possibly no more events will be needed.

    [02] THEODORAKIS WILL PRESENT "ZORBA" IN THE THEATER OF SKOPJE THIS EVENING

    World famous Greek music composer Mikis Theodorakis will create a bridge of friendship between Greece and FYROM this evening when he will present "Zorba" in the National Theater of Skopje.

    Mr.Theodorakis characterized this initiative as a political event and expressed optimism that the two countries are close to an agreement on the issue of the name. In the Greek mission participate 10 Parliament deputies, prefects, mayors and trade unionists.

    [03] THE FIRST GREEK SOLDIERS WILL ARRIVE IN ALBANIA ON WEDNESDAY

    The first Greek soldiers will arrive in Albania on Wednesday and later they will be followed by the rest of the Greek force that will be deployed in Tirana and Vlore.

    Meanwhile, the Albanians will be called to decide on the system of government they prefer for their country in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The decision was made by President Berisha and 10 Albanian political parties.

    [04] BULGARIA WILL BE A MEMBER OF NATO IN FIVE YEARS

    Bulgarian Foreign Minister Stoyan Stalev speculated that Bulgaria will be a member of NATO in five years, while the country will need more time before becoming an EU member.

    In an interview to a German newspaper, mr.Stalev praised the support offered to his country by Greece in the effort to become a member of the EU. He also praised Turkey's support to the Bulgarian efforts for NATO membership. He stated that the relations with Germany are important as this country plays a mediating role in Bulgaria's negotiations with the two organizations.

    [05] A SUPREME HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL WAS ESTABLISHED IN TURKEY

    A Supreme Human Rights Council has been established in Turkey in which will participate Undersecretaries from the Ministries of Justice, Foreign Affairs and the Interior as well as, Turkish government Presidency officials. The Council will operate on a temporary basis until the ratification of a plan that provides for the establishment of a Human Rights Undersecretariat.

    The Council will examine and evaluate the allegations on human rights violations as well as, the measures and regulations that are in effect, while it will make recommendations regarding their implementation. Also, it will follow the issues concerning Turkey that are discussed in the responsible bodies of international organizations, such as the United Nations and the Council of Europe.

    [06] INFLATION IN BULGARIA WAS 12,3% IN MARCH

    Inflation in Bulgaria dropped to 12,3% in March from 242,7% in February. According to a agreement signed in Washington last night between Bulgaria and the International Monetary Fund, inflation in April should not exceed 12,9%, while in May should be below 9,4% with the prospect of a gradual decrease during 1997.

    Based on the agreement with the IMF, the annual increase of inflation in Bulgaria should not be over 1,4% by the end of 1997.

    [07] GREECE, PORTUGAL AND SPAIN HAVE THE LOWEST FOOD PRICES IN THE EU

    Greece, Portugal and Spain have the lowest food prices in the European Union, according to a research made by "Eurostat".

    Specifically, Greece has the lowest prices for meat, sea-food and cheese but prices are higher for the rest of dairy products and flour.

    [08] THE UNITED STATES WILL UNDERTAKE A NEW INITIATIVE FOR THE SOLUTION OF THE CYPRUS PROBLEM

    US President Bill Clinton gave the assurance that the US government will make efforts for the undertaking of a new initiative for the solution of the Cyprus problem and the settlement of the Greek-Turkish relations.

    Responding to questions made by reporters, after his speech in the conference of the US Association of Newspaper Publishers in Washington, the US President confirmed that his country's initiative will be made this year.

    [09] AGREEMENT FOR THE EXPANSION AND PROTECTION OF INVESTMENTS IN CYPRUS AND RUSSIA

    A new phase has begun for the Cypriot-Russian relations, stated Cypriot Finance Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou after the signing of an economic agreement in Moscow for the expansion and protection of investments in the two countries.

    Mr.Christodoulou also met with Russian Culture Minister Gevgeni Sitorov and the two men stated that in spite of the existing problems, which mostly have to do with Russia's course toward the free market economy, bilateral economic relations are developing with a rapid pace.
