    [01] THE MARCH 25 GREEK NATIONAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS HAVE BEGUN

    Student parades were held today in many cities within the framework of the celebrations for the March 25 Greek national holiday, commemorating the Greek revolt against the Turkish yoke.

    In Athens, a student parade was held with the participation of students representing Cyprus, the island of Crete and the town of Kalavrita, while in Thessaloniki wreath laying ceremonies were held at the monument of the 3rd Army Corps and a student parade will take place tomorrow.

    The celebrations will culminate tomorrow with the large military parade in Athens.

    [02] PRIME MINISTER SIMITIS WILL VISIT GERMANY DURING EASTER WEEK

    Prime Minister Kostas Simitis will make an unofficial visit to Germany during Easter Week and according to information from Bonn, mr.Simitis will meet with Chancellor Kohl on April 24.

    The following day the Greek Prime Minister will visit Marbrug in Essen to be declared honorary professor in the city's Law School where he had studied in the period of 1954-55. Mr.Simitis had lived in Germany as a political refugee during the Greek junda and taught in different Universities.

    Mr.Simitis is expected to return to Greece after the Easter Holidays.

    [03] THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION PARTY COALITION OF THE LEFT WILL VISIT SKOPJE

    The leader of the Greek opposition party Coalition of the Left, mr.Nikos Konstantopoulos will visit Skopje on Thursday and Friday heading a party delegation.

    Mr.Konstantopoulos will meet with FYROM's President Kiro Gligorov, Prime Minister Tservenkofski and Foreign Minister Frckofski.

    Meanwhile, a delegation of FYROM's Foreign Ministry is expected in Athens on Wednesday to meet with representatives of the Greek Ministry of Public Order for talks on issues of mutual interest.

    [04] MS.DORA BAKOYIANNI WAS ELECTED TO THE ND CENTRAL COMMITTEE

    Ms.Dora Bakoyianni was elected to the new Central Committee of main opposition party New Democracy getting the overwhelming majority of the votes among the rest Parliament deputies, who were candidates for members of the committee. Ms.Bakoyianni is followed by mr.Dimas, mr.Kefaloyiannis, mr.Bratakos and mr.A.Karamanlis. In the new Central Committee are being represented all tendencies in the conservative party but the majority of the body is controlled by the newly elected party leader.

    Meanwhile, the new President of New Democracy, Kostas Karamanlis visited today in his residence the founder of the party, his uncle Konstantinos Karamanlis.

    In the following days, the new party leader is expected to meet with former party leader Miltiadis Evert, Dora Bakoyianni and other leading party members, while he is also expected to make a proposal for dialogue to former party members Antonis Samaras, Andreas Andrianopoulos and Michalis Papakonstantinou.

    [05] GREECE PERSISTS IN THE "FREEZING" OF THE EU FUNDS TO ANKARA

    Greece will persist in the "freezing" of the EU funds to Ankara in today's EU Foreign Ministers Council meeting.

    Greek alternate Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou is expected to state that Greece has no objections to the meeting of the EU-Turkey Association Council that will be held on April 30 but he will stress that he is categorically opposed to the release of about 400 million dollars the EU partners want to grant to Turkey.

    [06] GERMANY PREPARES TO EXTRADITE YALTZIN OZBEY ACCUSED OF MURDERING JOURNALIST ABDI IPEKCI

    Germany prepares to extradite to Turkey right extremist Yaltzin Ozbey, arrested for drug trafficking, who is accused of murdering journalist Abdi Ipekci.

    If Ozbey does not appeal, maintaining that he will be tortured and sentenced to death if he is returned to Turkey, his extradition is expected to be issued in the next few weeks.

    Meanwhile, Ozbey, whose jail term ends this month, writes in a letter he has sent to the Turkish newspaper "Hurriyet" that he is ready to return to Turkey and testify before the Turkish courts on the murder case, which is still under investigation.

    [07] THE RUSSIAN MAFIA IS BEHIND LUKANOV'S ASSASSINATION

    The Russian mafia is involved in the assassination of former Prime Minister and Parliament deputy of the Bulgarian Socialist Party Andrei Lukanov, who was killed on October 2, 1996 in front of his house in Sofia.

    According to the Sofia newspaper "Trud", the statement was made to reporters in Helsinki by Russian Security Director Nikolai Kovaliov.

    [08] THE NATO SECRETARY-GENERAL WILL MEET WITH THE PRESIDENT OF FYROM

    NATO Secretary-General Javier Solana will meet with FYROM's President Kiro Gligorov during his two-day visit to FYROM that began today.

    Mr.Solana will also meet with the Ministers of Defence and Foreign Affairs, mr.Hadjinski and mr.Frckofski.

    The topic of the discussions, that have been planned since last year, will be NATO's enlargement and the likelihood of FYROM to be included in it.

    Turkish President Suleiman Demirel accused the Greek-Cypriots of provocative behaviour and of UN resolutions' violations in his address made in the extraordinary session of the Islamic Conference countries that was held in Islamabad. Mr.Demirel stated that the Cyprus problem can be solved only through dialogue with the Turkish-Cypriots.

    The Turkish President is on a formal visit to Pakistan to participate in the events for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the country's independence and also to attend the extraordinary session of the Islamic Conference countries under the title "The Islam before the challenges of the 21st century".

    [10] BALKAN TRADING COMPANY BASED IN THESSALONIKI WAS FOUNDED RECENTLY

    A Balkan Trading Company, based in Thessaloniki, was recently founded on the initiative of the Macedonia-Thrace Bank. The Trading Company will have offices in the capitals of most neighbouring countries and will give a new dimension to the sector of transactions and investments in the Balkans. The first two of its offices will be opened in Sofia and Bucharest.

    This new institution will support the activities of the member companies and will attempt to find the best possible solutions to the problems faced by businessmen in the newly established Balkan markets.

    The company's share-capital is 300 million drachmas and the Macedonia- Thrace Bank has undertaken to cover 9,33% of it. The rest of its share- capital will be covered by Greek companies.

    [11] THE EU FOREIGN MINISTERS DISCUSS IN BRUSSELS THE CRISIS IN ALBANIA

    The Council of EU Foreign Ministers examines in Brussels the crisis in Albania in the presence of Albanian Foreign Minister Arian Starova.

    The talks will focus on the issue of humanitarian aid and on the nature of the international force that will accompany the mission, which will be called to contribute to the restoration of order in Albania.

    Greece has set as pre-conditions that first there should be a UN Security Council resolution on the matter and a written request made by the Albanian government, while the force that will be deployed in the country must be under the auspices of the OSCE. The proposal will be presented in today's meeting of the EU Ministers by alternate Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou.

    Albanian Prime Minister Baskim Fino is expected in Rome today and tomorrow will have meetings with his european counterparts.
