NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANS[C] WORLDNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] KOSTAS KARAMANLIS NEW LEADER OF MAIN OPPOSITION NEW DEMOCRACYWeb Posted: 14:32 GMT+2Athens, March 22 (MPA)Kostas Karamanlis, was elected as president of Greece's main opposition party New Democracy, with 2350 votes, beating the second contender George Souflias who had amassed 1048 ballots cast in his favor.At 40 years old, Mr. Karamanlis is the youngest president that has ever reigned New Democracy which could very well have been his appeal for the party's 3,609 delegates, as he has promised to turn a new page in Greece's history and provide the country with fresh political initiatives. Mr. Karamanlis is the nephew and namesake of New Democracy's founder Konstantinos Karamanlis, a milestone in Greece's modern political history as he has served lengthy terms in the country's Premiership and Presidency. A deputy in Thessaloniki's A District, Mr. Karamanlis studied Law and did his post-graduate studies at the Tafts University Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He has a Master's in Political and Economic Sciences and a PhD in Diplomatic History. Mr.Karamanlis was a member of the New Democracy's Youth Party (ONNED) and served in ONNED's and New Democracy's organizing and ideological sectors during 1974-1979 and 1984-1989. He practiced law between 1984-89 and taught Political Science, Diplomatic History and Business Law at Deree College. Mr. Karamanlis has co-authored the book "Eleftherios Venizelos and Greece's Foreign Relations 1928-32". He also edited and prefaced various historical publications. He was elected second parliamentarian of Thessaloniki with New Democracy in June 1989 and April of 1990 and first deputy in the elections of October 1993 and September of 1996. A.F. Kostas Karamanlis was elected yesterday as party leader in the second round of voting getting 69,16% of the votes, while the other candidate for the party Presidency, mr.Giorgos Souflias, got 30,84% of the votes.Immediately after his election, mr.Karamanlis stated that there are no winners or losers and that the only winner in the party congress is New Democracy itself. The Prime Minister stated, after his meeting with his Romanian counterpart in Bucharest yesterday, that Greece has secured Romania's full support in the Cyprus issue and the Greek-Turkish relations. Referring to the invitation by FYROM's President Kiro Gligorov to visit Skopje, mr.Simitis stated that the right moment for this visit will certainly come. He referred to specific destructions of churches that were made with the blessings of Ankara and called on the delegates to protest against the human rights violations commited in Cyprus by Turkey. He also called on the session to take all necessary measures for the protection of human rights in Cyprus, including the protection of its religious and cultural heritage.
