    [01] NEW DEMOCRACY'S PRE-CONGRESS CONFERENCE BEGAN IN THESSALONIKI

    The two-day pre-congress conference of the main opposition party of New Democracy began in Thessaloniki today with the participation of 2.000 party members. In the conference take part the 4 contenders of the New Democracy party Presidency namely, mr.Miltiades Evert, mr.Giorgos Souflias, mr.Kostas Karamanlis and mr.Viron Polidoras.

    Yesterday, party President mr.Evert stated that New Democracy will not disappoint the Greek people, its members or its supporters.

    [02] PRIME MINISTER SIMITIS IS ON A THREE-DAY TOUR OF THESSALY

    Prime Minister Kostas Simitis is on a three-day tour of Thessaly, in central Greece, heading a group of government ministers, to be briefed on the course of the development projects in the region and on local problems.

    His first stop was the city of Larisa, while on Sunday he will visit the prefectures of Magnisia and Karditsa and will lay a wreath in Kileler.

    Prime Minister Simitis, speaking to army officers serving in the 1st Army Regiment in the city of Larisa, said that Turkey has become the greater factor of instability in the Aegean, the Balkans and the Middle East.

    The Prime Minister stated that the ignorant of history visions of the revival of the Ottoman Empire are inventions of the Turkish establishment aimed at defusing the big domestic problems.

    Referring to the Greek positions, mr.Simitis underlined that the status in the Aegean is absolutely clear and the national sovereignty and territorial integrity can not be disputed or be under negotiation.

    The Prime Minister characterized the Cyprus problem as an international first priority problem of invasion and occupation of an independent state by Turkey. He said that Greece does not have the illusion that the EU partners will adopt immediately its positions but added that the International Law is on Greece's side.

    [03] THE PRIME MINISTER WILL VISIT WASHINGTON ON WEDNESDAY

    Greek Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos will have important contacts with members of the Greek-American community in New York where he arrived yesterday, while next Wednesday Prime Minister Kostas Simitis will visit Washington.

    Also, in New York have arrived former Prime Minister Tzanis Tzanetakis and governing party of PASOK Central Committee Secretary Kostas Skandalides.

    [04] THE SECONDARY TEACHERS NATIONAL UNION WILL DECIDE TODAY ON THE COURSE OF THEIR MOBILIZATIONS

    The national union of the secondary school teachers will decide today on the course of their mobilizations and whether they will end their seven- week long strike.

    The Ministry of Education left open the possibility to postpone the date of the final exams and extend the school year. The government also rejected any new meetings with the secondary teachers national union for as long as the strike continues.

    [05] NINE PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN VIOLENT CLASHES IN THE ALBANIAN CITY OF VLORE

    Vlore 1 March (MPA)

    Nine people were killed and 22 were injured during violent clashes between demonstrators and police in the Albanian city of Vlore last night, while police in the city of Argyrokastro has been put on alert, as university students are on a strike in a show of support to the students in Vlore.

    In Tirana, the Parliament holds an emergency meeting today to deal with the situation, while the opposition parties held anti-government demonstrations in the Albanian capital and in other large cities.

    The clashes in Vlore were caused by rumours according to which, about 40 university students, who were on a hunger strike for the past 10 days, had been forcibly removed from the university grounds.

    In response, angry demonstrators stole automatic guns, hand granades and amunition from the secret police building in the city and set it on fire. Among those killed are protestors and policemen. According to information police, used automatic guns to disperse the demonstrators.

    [06] THE ZURICH AND LONDON AGREEMENTS DO NOT STOP CYPRUS FROM BECOMING A FULL EU MEMBER

    The Zurich and London agreements do not stop Cyprus from becoming a full member of the European Union before Turkey's accession.

    The above are mentioned in a statement issued by the EU Embassy in Nicosia after Dutch EU commissioner Hans Van Den Broek completed his visit to Cyprus.

    [07] THE CYPRIOT FOREIGN MINISTER BEGINS A TOUR OF EUROPEAN CAPITALS TOMORROW

    Cypriot Foreign Minister Alekos Michaelides is expected to arrive in Athens tomorrow from where he will start his tour of European capitals to discuss the EU role in the solution of the Cyprus problem.

    On Monday, he will meet in Athens with alternate Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou, while in London on Tuesday he will have contacts with his British counterpart Malcolm Rifkind and "shadow" Foreign Minister Robin Cook.

    On Wednesday, will meet in Paris with the French Foreign Minister and on Friday will meet in Rome with his Italian counterpart Lamberto Dini.

    On Monday, March 10 mr.Michaelides will be in Bonn to meet with German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel and the following day will be in The Hague for talks with the Dutch Foreign Minister.
