    [01] PREMIER TO TOUR THESSALY REGION THIS WEEKEND

    The Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, heading a ministerial delegation, is to conduct a three-day tour throughout Greece's central region of Thessaly, beginning on Saturday.

    Mr. Simitis will visit a military camp on Saturday and in turn will visit local authorities in Thessaly and will address a rally in the evening.

    Greece's Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos used stern language towards Turkey over its continued provocations against Greece and also directed his wrath towards European Union member-states for their aggressive stance towards Cyprus.

    Mr. Pangalos characterized the stance adopted by France, Britain and Germany as insensible and ludicrous and warned that for as long as there is this entanglement in the negotiations of Cyprus's accession to the EU, Greece will present a series of obstacles to the community's expansion.

    [03] SUPREME COURT JUSTICE IN THESSALONIKI TO LOOK INTO CULTURAL CAPITAL OF EUROPE ORGANIZATION'S FINANCES

    The Board of Directors of the "Thessaloniki, Cultural Capital of Europe '97" Organization has presented a series of measures that will lead to an improvement of the organization's communications and promotions as well as grant a dose of transparency in its financial matters.

    Meanwhile, the vice-chairman of the country's Supreme Court is to arrive in Thessaloniki tomorrow in order to look into the investigations currently conducted regarding the organizations' financial handlings.

    [04] EDUCATION MINISTER TO MEET WITH TEACHERS NATIONAL UNION TODAY

    Education Minister Gerasimos Arsenis is to meet with the teachers national union (OLME) today.

    During a press conference held yesterday, Mr. Arsenis promised that 3,000 unemployed teachers will be assigned to classrooms within the year and also vowed to fulfil all of their education-related demands.

    Prime Minister Kostas Simitis warned that the government will proceed to measures if a solution to the teachers' six-week long strike is not found soon.

    [05] BELGRADE'S MAYOR ZORAN DJINDJIC WILL COME TO ATHENS IN MARCH

    Belgrade's new mayor Zoran Djindjic, one of the tri-partite opposition's "Zajedno" leaders, is to visit Athens in March, on the invitation on Greece's main opposition leader Miltiades Evert and Athens Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos.

    The two mayors will aim to strengthen cooperation between the two municipalities. Mr. Djindjic is expected to ask Mr. Avramopoulos to grant Belgrade with aid in addressing its transportation problems.

    [06] U.S. INITIATIVE ON CYPRUS DELAYED DUE TO NICOSIA'S MISSILES PURCHASE

    The United States initiative over the Cyprus issue is delayed due to Nicosia's decision to purchase anti-aircraft missiles from Russia, stated Carey Cavanaugh, Director of the Office of Southeastern European Affairs at the U.S. State Department.

    Mr. Cavanaugh, along with State Department spokesperson Nicholas Burns, avoided expressing any criticism of Turkey's continuous violations of Cyprus' FIR.

    The U.S. official merely emphasized that these flights do not contribute to the island's security and intensify tensions.

    [07] BULGARIA: CABINET CLEAN UP TO START, FORMER PREMIER ABOUT TO BE ARRESTED

    Sofia's daily "Standart" reports that Bulgaria's former Prime Minister Jean Videnov is about to be arrested, being held responsible for tthe country's lack of grain which has avalanched into a serious economic crisis for the country.

    The article also quotes the Minister of Interior and Public Order Boyomil Bonev who directly accuses Videnov.

    "The former Premier had no idea of the grain balance-sheets," Mr. Bonev said, adding that "we arrived at this assessment from the orders that he himself signed for grain export."

    On the following Tuesday, the state's investigative committee is to meet to discuss the issue of the number of politicians who are forbidden from exiting the country.

    Meanwhile, the economic crisis in Bulgaria continues to mount with a galloping inflation that has reached the 100 percent mark.

    [08] THE "GREY WOLVES" POSTPONED THEIR RALLY IN THE FENCED PART OF THE CITY OF FAMAGUSTA

    The rally of the Turkish extreme-right organization "Grey Wolves" in the fenced old city of Varosia in the Turkish occupied Famagusta in northern Cyprus, which was scheduled to take place on Sunday March 2, has been postponed according to the underground Turkish-Cypriot radio station "Bayrak", as it was reported by the Cypriot news agency CNA.

    The Turkish-Cypriot radio station mentioned that after last night's meeting held between the "Grey Wolves" and other Turkish-Cypriot nationalist organizations was decided the postponement of the rally "due to the fragile situation in Turkey", as it was stated.

    According to information, the rally is expected to take place later in March.

    The march of the Turkish extreme-right organization "Grey Wolves" that was scheduled to take place on March 2 would have had a damaging effect on the Turkish-Cypriot side regarding the issue of the Cyprus problem, stated Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    According to the Turkish-Cypriot press, Rauf Denktash said that the fenced city of Varosia is being protected by the Turkish army and he did not want the demonstrators to be involved in a confrontation with the Turkish soldiers. He also said that an official position on the issue has already been issued, adding that if the Russian missiles are deployed then Varosia will be opened.

    Leader of the Turkish-Cypriot "New Cyprus" party Alpay Durduran maintained that it should not be forgotten that there are Turkish-Cypriots who believe that the arrival of settlers in Varosia would mean a departure from peace. The "Grey Wolves" rally has also been condemned by 21 organizations and associations.

    [10] THE SLAV STUDENTS IN FYROM WARN THAT THEY WILL START A HUNGER STRIKE

    The Slav university students, who continue their mobilizations for a second week in a row, warned the government of FYROM that they will start a hunger strike demanding the repeal of the law that allows the teaching of classes in the Education Department of the University of Skopje to be held in the Albanian language as well.

    According to an ultimatum issued yesterday by the students, it is stressed that in case their demands are not met by Monday night they will start mobilizations and a hunger strike.

    [12] CYPRUS' EU ACCESSION NEGOTIATIONS WILL BEGIN SIX MONTHS AFTER THE INTER-GOVERNMENTAL CONFERENCE, STATED MR.VAN DEN BROEK

    Dutch EU Commissioner Hans Van Den Broek in his meeting in Nicosia today with Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides, that was held in the presence of Foreign Minister Alekos Michaelides, gave the assurance that the negotiations for Cyprus' accession into the European Union will start six months after the Inter-Governmental Conference.

    Mr.Van Den Broek clarified that there can not be any involvement of the Turkish-Cypriots in the accession negotiations without having first a certain mobility toward a political settlement of the Cyprus issue.

    Earlier, mr.Clerides had discussed the developments with UN Secretary- General alternate special envoy to Cyprus Gustav Feissel, who returned yesterday to Cyprus after consultations in New York with the UN Secretary- General.

    [13] THE GERMAN MINISTER OF ENVIRONMENT WAS ATTACKED WITH EGGS IN A PROTEST AGAINST NUCLEAR WASTE DUMPING

    Germany's Federal Minister of Environment Agela Merkel was attacked yesterday by angry demonstrators, who threw at her tomatoes and eggs, protesting against her persistence to carry out the transport and burial of nuclear waste in Gorleben of South Saxony.

    Based on a government decision, this region is to be used for the creation of nuclear waste dump but the local residents are reacting strongly.

    The minister visited the region to meet with the local "Citizens' Committee" and when she made it clear that the transport of the nuclear waste to the region will not be cancelled, she was attacked with tomatoes and eggs as she was leaving the building where the meeting took place.

    [14] NATO SECRETARY-GENERAL JAVIER SOLANA TO VISIT ATHENS TOMORROW

    In light of tomorrow's visit to Athens by NATO's Secretary-General Javier Solana, a conference was chaired this afternoon by Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, attended by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and National Defense, Theodoros Pangalos and Akis Tsochatzopoulos, respectively, as well as Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Yiannos Kranidiotis.

    Msgrs. Pangalos, Tsochatzopoulos and Solana will look into ways of reducing the tension in the Aegean and will also examine issues related to the Alliance's new structure. According to reports, the NATO Secretary-General is to bear proposals for lessening tensions in the Aegean, as well as for the matter created after France's Britain's and Germany's wish to involve the Turkish-Cypriots into the negotiations regarding Cyprus' accession to the European Union.

    [15] ATHENS IS AMONG THE TOP THREE CITIES FAVOURITE TO HOST THE OLYMPIC GAMES OF 2004

    Under the headline "The favourites are Rome, Athens and Cape Town", the Yugoslav newspaper "Politica" published an article written by Goran Kovasevic that refers to the 2004 Olympic Games.

    The article stresses that the International Olympic Committee issued last week an appraisal of the candidatures for the hosting of the 2004 Summer Olympics which is included in a 350-page report.

    In the "race" for the hosting of the Olympic Games take part 11 cities and on March 7 will be announced in Laussane the five finalist cities, while the winner will be declared on September 5. In the newspaper article is pointed out that there are no favourites but after the IOC report, Athens and Rome have a lead over the other candidate cities.
