    Thessaloniki, February 22 (MPA)

    The President of the Hellenic Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos will attend this weekend's festivities at Litochoron commemmorating the anniversary of the Mt. Olympus Revolution of 1878.

    Mr. President will be appointed as an honorary citizen of Litochoron and will attend the festivities and parade held in his honor.

    The Central Committee of the ruling party PASOK will continue its meeting today where the participating officials are to discuss the recent protests conducted by the Greek farmers. Yesterday the Premier insisted on the need to apply the government's current policies. The Premier said that a united and renewed PASOK can address the challenges of the times.

    Thessaloniki, February 22 (MPA)

    Greece's Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos stated that Thessaloniki has impressed all those who attended the inauguration ceremony of the "Thessaloniki: Cultural Capital of Europe, '97 Organization" and characterized the city as the brightest cultural capital.

    Mr. Venizelos also referred to the various criticisms heard from time to time about the Organization's money-management methods, and clarified that the Organization is in charge of two different things, the projects and the events.

    Recent articles in the Dutch press have caused waves throughout the world, as it is reported that Kurds from the village of Tekevler in Southeastern Turkey where used as mine-sweepers by the Turkish army.

    The reports also state that the Turkish Parliament's Committee on Human Rights is currently looking into these reports.

    [05] PANEPIROTIC UNION'S 30TH SESSION OF US, CANADA, AUSTRALIA BEGINS IN FLORIDA

    Florida, February 22 (MPA)

    The 30th session of the Panepirotic Union of the United States, Canada and Australia is currently in motion in Florida, with the participation of Greece's Minister of the Interior Alekos Papadopoulos and Minister of Merchant Marine Stavros Soumakis and Greece's Ambassador to the U.S. Lukas Tsilas.

    Mr. Papadopoulos relayed Prime Minister Kostas Simitis' warm salutation to the delegates, emhasizing that Greece's culture must be taught to the newer generations.

    Mr. Soumakis stated in his address that "Hellenism, and especially the element from Epirus, serves as a spear in protecting Greece's interests and rights."

    Also attending the four-day session are various US senators and congressmen of Greek heritage, as well as Greek-origin deputies of the Albanian parliament.
