    [01] THE SECONDARY EDUCATION SCHOOL TEACHERS' UNION WILL DECIDE TODAY ON THE CONTINUATION OF THEIR STRIKE

    The secondary education school teachers' union will decide today if their strike will continue until Friday, while the union's presiding board will meet again on Monday with Education Minister Gerasimos Arsenis.

    Meanwhile, the elementary and kindergarden school teachers will decide today if they will strike in the beginning of February.

    The Greek government warned that the imminent farmers' mobilizations will be faced in a dynamic way.

    Greek government spokesman Dimitris Reppas made it clear that the state will deal with possible road blockades by taking measures aimed at averting such a development.

    [03] THREE TURKISH WARSHIPS ARRIVED THIS MORNING IN THE PORT OF THE TURKISH OCCUPIED FAMAGUSTA

    Three Turkish warships sailed into the port of the Turkish occupied Famagusta in Cyprus, and the action is being regarded as a new Turkish provocation.

    According to the Turkish-Cypriot press, Turkish Defence Minister Turhan Tayan maintained that this is a visit of peace, adding that the warships will visit all the Turkish occupied ports in Cyprus.

    The Turkish-Cypriot newspaper "Kibris" in a main article writes that the arrival of the warships in Cyprus constitutes a response to the Greek- Cypriot armaments.

    Meanwhile, the Turkish television reported that the visit of the Turkish warships is an indication of Ankara's solidarity toward the Turkish- Cypriots. The three warships will leave the Turkish occupied Cyprus on Wednesday, January 29.

    [04] CILLER WILL MEET IN ROME ON MONDAY WITH THE FOREIGN MINISTERS OF ITALY, FRANCE, GERMANY, BRITAIN AND SPAIN

    Turkish government Vice-President and Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller will visit Rome on Monday to meet with the Foreign Ministers of Italy, France, Germany, Britain and Spain. The main goal of the meetings is Turkey to be included in the list of countries that want to become full EU members.

    Ms.Ciller will also seek to win the release of EU funds to Turkey blocked by Greece, while she will also try to convince the Italian, French, German, British and Spanish Foreign Ministers that the installation of the Russian S-300 missiles in Cyprus has to be averted.

    [05] THE BALKAN CULTURE MINISTERS WILL DISCUSS THE ISSUE OF THE INTER- BALKAN CULTURAL NETWORK BASED IN THESSALONIKI

    The Balkan Culture Ministers, in their meeting in Thessaloniki next Thursday, will discuss the establishment of an Inter-Balkan Cultural Network, that will be based in the city and will widen the cooperation prospects among the Balkan countries.

    The Culture Ministers will also discuss ways for the improved cooperation and information exchange in the meetings that will be held on January 30- 31.

    Bulgaria's new President Petar Stoyanov will visit Brussels on January 29 and will be received by Greek Euro-deputy and President of the Joint EU- Bulgaria Parliamentary Committee Nikos Papakyriazis, who will also act as a representative of the European Parliament President.

    Mr.Papakyriazis will outline to the Bulgarian President the EU's positions regarding the ongoing political crisis in Bulgaria.

    [07] THE NEW US SECRETARY OF STATE EXPRESSED CONCERN OVER CYPRUS

    New US Secretary of State Madleen Albright in her first press conference expressed concern over Cyprus.

    Ms.Albright also expressed the belief that there will be certain opportunities this year to improve the situation in the Cyprus problem.

    The alternate Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Holland, which currently holds the rotating EU Presidency, will visit Washington on January 28 accompanied by the European Commission Vice-President and the main topic of the discussions with ms.Albright will be the Cyprus issue.
