NEWS HEADLINES[A] GREECE[B] BALKANS[C] EUROPE[D] WORLDNEWS IN DETAIL[A] GREECE[01] WASHINGTON DEPLORED CILLER'S AGGRESSIVE STATEMENTS ON CYPRUSWeb Posted: 17:00 GMT+2Washington 11 January (MPA)US State Department spokesman Nicolas Burns commenting on the threats made by Turkish Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller that her country will not show tolerance and will take all the necessary measures if the Russian missiles are deployed in Cyprus, characterized them as unjustified, irresponsible and unwise as opposed to the sensible and responsible position of Cyprus.Mr.Burns deplored Ciller's aggressive statements saying that Turkey has no excuse for making threats publicly while any decision for the use of force is beyond the limits of the acceptable principles in international behaviour. Tomorrow, US official mr.Cavanaugh is expected to arrive in Nicosia, while on Monday will be in Athens and on Wednesday in Ankara. Mr.Cavanaugh is expected to call on Greece and Turkey to make immediate steps for the easing of the tension. Meanwhile, Russia stated that a Turkish attack against Cyprus will be in violation of international law. Concern over the increased tensions in Cyprus was expressed and by UN Secretary General mr.Annan, who stressed that the UN Charter forbids the threat for the use of force or the use of force. According to the state news agency, 97 people were injured during the clashes between the police forces and the demonstrators, while Bulgarian President Zeliu Zelev publicly expressed his support to the demonstrators' demand. Turkish newspaper "Sabah" editor-in-chief Zafer Mutlu stated that the problem will be resolved with Turkey's full membership in the European Union.The General Directors of the Turkish newspapers "Milliyet", "Hurriyet", "Sabah" and "Yeni Yuzyil" informed the Euro-deputies on the new law that aims at the censorship and punishment of journalists who are criticizing the islamist government of Prime Minister Necmetin Erbakan. [D] WORLD[06] CILLER AND KARADAYI WILL VISIT THE OCCUPIED PART OF CYPRUS NEXT WEEKWeb Posted: 17:00 GMT+2Nicosia 11 January (MPA)Ankara heightens tensions in spite of the new warning that came from the US calling Turkey to stop the threats against Cyprus.Turkish Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller and Chief of the Army General Staff Hakki Karadayi will visit the Turkish occupied northern Cyprus next week, while according to the Turkish newspaper "Milliyet", Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will visit Ankara next week. Meanwhile, Democratic Left party leader and architect of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus Bulent Etsevit stated that Turkey must undertake Cyprus' defence pointing out that the Cypriot Republic buys Russian missiles on purpose, stressing that its objective is not to attack but to prepare another "game". According to the Turkish politician, the Greek-Cypriots aim at "cornering" Turkey. He also maintained that Cyprus, its allies and Russia are promoting a scenario according to which, the Greek-Cypriots will be armed seeking Turkey's reaction so that later will be able to say to Ankara "don't react to Cyprus' accession into the EU and we will persuade them to stop arming".
