[01] EXTREMISTS OPEN FIRE AT RANDOM IN CAIRO, KILL 19 GREEK TOURISTS

Nineteen people have been killed, most of whom greek tourists, and 14 are injured, when four individuals armed with automatic rifles opened fire on a group of tourists outside the "Europa" hotel, near the Cairo pyramids this morning.

According to eyewitness reports, the assassins, three men and one woman dressed in white robes, got off a small truck and walked to the hotel's entrance where they opened fire against the tourists at random shouting "God is great." They were able to get away with their vehicle, amidst the chaos that followed after the attack.

According to reports by the Associated Press and the French Press Agency, the group of greek tourists was getting ready to travel to Alexandria by a tourist bus.

A spokesperson from the Greek Embassy in Cairo stated that at this time no additional information is known about the attack, although, according to reports, the massacre appears to be the work of extremist muslims who are active in Egypt.

In a statement issued by the Egyptian Foreign Affairs Ministry, "terrorists" are considered responsible for the massacre, a term used by the egyptian authorities when referring to the extremist muslims who are attempting to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak.

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior announced that the tourists were Greeks, while, according to the hotel's staff, there were many Poles among them.

A spokesperson from the Thessaloniki-based travel agency "Philoxenia" which organized the tour in Egypt, stated that approximately 50 people were participating in this tour, mostly elderlies from Thessaloniki and Athens.

The "Europa" hotel is often frequented by Israeli tourists, although it hasn't been ascertained if they were the terrorists' target.

[16] REPORT ON THE EASTERN EUROPE ECONOMY

The Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia, all of them members of CEFTA, have achieved the biggest successes in the implementation of the reforms necessary for solving the economic recession. This is the conclusion of the annual Report on the World Economy issued by the UN Economy Commision for Europe (ECE), according to international media reports.

Last year the GNP growth in these countries was of 3-5%, in Romania 6,9% and in Albania of 13,4%. Bulgaria and FYROM have had least favourable results with GNP growth of 2% each, while in Croatia a negative trend of 1,5% was noticed. On the average, economic growth in Eastern Europe has risen to 6%, but it is still an average of 15% below the levels before the end of 1989, when in this former communist states began the transition to the market economy, the report mentioned. Western Europe absorbs 50 to 60 percent of the exports from Central and Eastern European states.

"Eastern Europe now stands out as an area of rapid growth," the ECE analysts said, adding that differences were growing between the economies of the CEFTA countries member as well as Romanian and Albania and most of the former Yugoslav states and Bulgaria. In a note of caution, the analysts said that although overall Eastern Europe continued to work its way out of recession, full recovery "is still some years ahead."

It would be premature to be overly optimistic about the economic prospects of these countries because it remains to be seen if the high rate of growth of some of them could be sustained, said the report, Economic Survey of Europe 1995-1996.

"Romania became the 30th country to use a nuclear power plant, but more important is that its nuclear plant is the first in Central and Eastern Europe and presents no risks in a way the Cernobil type does," the President of the ANSALDO company Bruno Musso stressed.

"Thanks to it Romania is sharing the general efforts to reduce the greenhouse effect. Cernavoda nuclear plant operations will also be supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency with special programs in order to be one of the most safe in Europe," the president of the Agency Johann von Ebenhorst Tehgbergen said.
