[01] THE PRIME MINISTER'S STATE OF HEALTH APPEARS TO BE STABLE

Greek Prime Minister mr Andreas Papandreou's medical condition appears to be stable according to the first communique issued by the doctors comprising the medical council observing mr Papandreou since he was admitted in hospital on November 20th.

According to the two medical communiques issued today today, in the past 24 hours the Prime Minister's health condition regarding the respiratory and renal functioning appears stable.

A spokesman for the council said today that mr. Papandreou is still on the respirator and undergoes dialysis treatment but contradicted that the functioning of his heart has been affected, stressing that it appears unchanged.

The same spokesman said that the council do not want to be optimistic but to approach reality as much as possible, but continued to refuse to commit himself to a specific time for the withdrawal of the respirator.

At the same time american dietologist Dr Rotondelli arrived today in Athens so that he helps mr Papandreou regain part of the weight he lost during the treatment he is submitted to.

Greek Press and Media Minister mr Tilemahos Hitiris said he did know whether doctors from the medical council briefed the opposition leader mr Miltiades Evert, the PASOK MP and prospective leader of the party mr Constantinos Simitis and ex-king mr Constantinos but condemned such phenomena in case it is proved they exist.

Mr Hitiris contradicted that voting takes place during the sessions of the medical council and that some decisions were taken on majority.

Mr Papandreou, 77 next February, was admitted in the Onassion Cardiology Centre of Athens, one of the best equipped in Europe, on November 20th, suffering from a from of pneumonia.

His situation deteriorated last Saturday and now he is giving a fight for life, which is getting difficult since in 1988 he was submitted in an open heart operation by egyptian surgeon dr Magdi Yacub in the hospital of Heartfield in London.

Mr Papandreou has been in office since October 1993 with an absolute parliamentary majority.

It was the third mandate mr Papandreou has received after the two successive elections he won in 1981 and 1985.

[02] POLITICAL MOBILITY IN THE GOVERNMENTAL PARTY

Political mobility continued today within the governmental socialistic party PASOK. Minister of Interior Affairs, Public Administration and Decentralization, Mr Akis Tsohadjopoulos, who is the first in order minister met the National Defense Minister mr Yerassimos Arsenis but the Press and Media Minister mr Tilemahos Hitiris refused to comment in the meeting of two of the prospective successors of mr Papandreou's which he described as private.

During the briefing he made today mr Hitiris expressed his disapproval of the question asking whether the government is aware that ex- minister mr Constantinos Simitis who is also a prospective candidate for the primeministership has formed a shadow government.

The minister reiterated that the government undr mr Tsohadjopoulos who is substituting mr Papnadreou as long as he is in hospital, works normally and announced that mr Tsohadjopoulos who will head the greek deligation in the European Union summit in Madrid will be briefed by the the foreign minister on the agenda of the summit, due in December.

[03] INCREASED AUTONOMY FOR THE OVERSEAS HELLENISM SAYS VICE MINISTER

The increased autonomy and self-determination of the Overseas Hellenism is the main objective of the way in which the Council of Overseas Hellenism and the World Assembly will be organised and enacted by the greek state, stressed Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs responsible for issues concerning the Overseas Hellenism mr.Grigoris Niotis speaking today in the organising conference of the Council of Overseas Hellenism.

According to mr.Niotis, the World Assembly of Hellenism will be an advisory institution representing Hellenism on a world scale, not just the organised Hellenism like the Council of Overseas Hellenism does, while it will also handle and issues of high strategic importance for Hellenism.

Mr.Niotis stressed that the World Assembly of Hellenism will be an institution that will appeal to the 17 million of greeks living abroad. It will be made up of 400 members, of which 100 will be elected by the Council of Overseas Hellenism. Also, 200 members will be distinguished personalities of the Overseas Hellenism who will be proposed to the responsible all- party committee by the Council of Overseas Hellenism, the Archbishops of the Orthodox Churches and the "Hellenism Institute". The rest 100 members will be distinguished personalities from Greece who will be proposed to the responsible all-party committee by the Greek Orthodox Church, the local administration, the Academy of Athens and the greek Universities' authorities.

In the 300 distiguished members is mandatory to be included 30 personalities from the university sector, the Church, the literary world, the arts, the business world, etc.

[04] FORUM OF GREEK INVESTORS LIVING ABROAD OPENED TODAY

The Conference of greek investors living abroad opened in Thessaloniki today in the framework of the Council of Overseas Hellenism with the participation of 250 delegates, among them 110 greek investors living abroad.

The government was represented by alternate Minister of National Economy Giorgos Anomeritis, Undersecretary of National Economy Ioannis Anthopoulos, Labour Minister Stephanos Djoumakas and Agriculture Minister Theodoros Stathis.

Speaking in the conference Undersecretary of National Economy mr.Anthopoulos underlined the strong interest of the greek investors living abroad for their country of origin adding that their interest for investments in Greece must be handled with seriousness and with the formulation of complete proposals.

Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs responsible for issues concerning the Overseas Hellenism mr.Grigoris Niotis referred to the efforts of the government aiming at uniting Hellenism. He also expressed the wish for the establishment of a world organization of greek businessmen living abroad in the framework of the institutional networks of Hellenism.

Minister of Macedonia-Thrace mr.Kostas Triaridis referred to the significant delays in the opening of new markets while he stressed the problems resulting from the bureaucracy in the public sector. He also presented the activities of his ministry concerning the initiatives for the backing of investors who want to expand their businesses in the Balkans, the Black Sea and Eastern Europe.

[05] CONFERENCE ON "BYZANTINE THESSALONIKI FROM 4TH TO 15TH CENTURY"

Conference on "Byzantine Thessaloniki from the 4th to the 15th century" is organised by the Institute for Balkan Studies in cooperation with the British Council and will take place in Thessaloniki on December 8-9.

The conference aims at sheding light on unknown or dark aspects of this period and to give the opportunity to the wider public to get a new, more complete knowledge of certain events that marked this period. In the conference will participate 20 greek and british scientists and researchers, historians and archeologists.

[06] 70 TONS OF HUMANITARIAN AID WILL BE SENT TO THE BOSNIAN SERBS

Seventy tons of humanitarian aid will be sent to the bosnian serbs by the Municipality of Neapolis on December 5th.

The final destination of the humanitarian aid will be the region of Prijedor in the Serb Republic of Bosnia and will include olive oil, flour, baby food and medicine. The mission will be headed by mayor of Neapolis mr.Hadjisavas.

[07] CONFERENCE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF EXPORTS OPENS IN THESSALONIKI

The first Greek Conference for the Development of Exports opens in Thessaloniki on Monday December 4th. The Conference is co-organised by the Association of Exporters in Northern Greece, the Greek Organisation of Foreign Trade, Thessaloniki's Commerce and Industry Chamber and the Arts and Crafts Chamber.

In the conference will be discussed the opportunities opened for the exports of greek products and also the forming of a national strategy for the development of the greek exports.
