[01] RESPIRATORY MECHANISM REMOVED FORM GREEK PRIME MINISTER

Greek Prime Minister mr Andreas Papandreou breathes without the assistance of the respiratory mechanism which has been used on him since early Tuesday morning announced late tonight the spokesman of the medical council observing him, dr Grigoris Scalkeas, vice president of the the Onassion Cardiology Centre of Athens, one of the best equipped in Europe, where mr Papandreou has been treated since last Monday.

In a communique which had been issued earlier, it was announced that the mechanism would be removed soon and that the condition of the health of the Greek Prime Minister continues improving according to the doctors taking part in the council.

The doctors signing the communique confirm that the imrpovement shown in the last two days continues and stress that they are optimistic despite the fact they have not found the virus which has caused the infection yet.

British aneasthesiologist dr Right from the hospital of Heartfiled in London, where mr Papandreou was submitted to an open heart operation by egyptian surgeon dr Magdi Yacub 7 years ago, took part in the seesion held by the council today and expressed his full accord with the desicions of the doctors.

As the Greek press and Media Minister mr Tilemahos Hitiris said dr Right was invited by mr Papandreou's relatives.

Greek Prime Minister, 77 next February, has been treated in hospital since Monday suffering from a form of pneumonia which the doctors have characterised as mild and curable.

In the beginning, the situation of mr Papandreou's has been characterised as critical taking into account the fact that he had had an open heart operation.

In October 1993 mr Papandreou received the third mandate to form a government with an absolute majority in the parliament after two mandates received in 1981 and 1985.In total up-to-now mr Papandreou, leading the socialistic PASOK has been in office for 10 years.

In the framework of the contacts the most prominent members of the party have to examine the situation, today the secretary of teh central committee of the party mr Constantinos Scandalidis met and exchanged views with MP and ex-commissioner ms Vasso Papandreou who stressed that elections earlier than due to in October 1997 should be avoided. Ms Papandreou is regarded as one of the most critical to the leadership of the party MPs.

The opinion against early elections are also shared by the Defense Minister mr Yerassimos Arsenis who is considered as one of the prospective leaders of the party.

Today MP and ex-vice president of the PASOK governments in the period 1981-89 mr Yannis Haralambopoulos contradicted that he has received the proposal to be the next Prime Minister of the government so that he leads the party to its next congress.

Mr Hitiris said that statemnets by proiminent opposition members claiming that there is a gap in power are irresponsible. while he added that the president of the opposition mr Evert is "irresponsible and not only".

Mr Hitiris said the government continues working normally while he stressed that PASOK is united and everybody in the party looks forward to the restoration of mr Papandreou's health.

[02] ATHENS REJECTS JENSEN'S APPOINTMENT AS NATO'S SECRETARY GENERAL

Athens repeated today objections concerning the appointment of ex-Danish Foreign Minister mr Ulf Eleman Jensen's as the new NATO's secretary general in replacement of resigned mr Willy Claes.

Greek Press and Media Minister mr Tilemahos Hitiris said that who made the statement did not make any further comments but as it is known Athens was bitterly annoyed by the position mr Jensen had adopted in spring 1992 when as president of the European Union council had strongly criticised the greek positions concerning recognition of FYROM.

[03] ATHENS READY TO PROCEED TO NEW NEGOTIATIONS ON FYROM's NAME

Greek Foreign Minister appeared today optimistic about the new phase of negotiations with Scopje concerning the name FYROM will be recognised under.

After a meeting with a deligation of the Pammacedonian Union of the United States mr Papoulias did not exclude that the suggestion that FYROM be named as "Central Balkan Republic" is include in the suggestions to be made.

Greece is ready to open negotiations with Skopje as soon as the United Nations Security Council mediator mr. Cyrus Vance gives the green light said today Greek Press and Media Minister mr Tilemahos Hitiris.

Mr Hitiris said that contacts with mr. Vance have already been made and characterized the restoration of President Gligorov's of FYROM health as encouraging adding that this development can help in starting the negotiations.

[04] ITALIAN MAGISTRATE ANTONIO DI PIETRO HONOURED IN GREECE

The Dimokrition University of Thrace Law School yesterday honoured italian magistrate Antonio Di Pietro best known as "mr. Clean Hands" by awarding him a Ph.D.

The ceremony opened the University's rector mr.Yiannis Panousis who praised magistrate Di Pietro for his fight against corruption in his country.

Mr.Di Pietro thanked the University's authorities for the honour and later gave a lecture on the subject "International cooperation in the fight against corruption".

[05] 2 TURKS WERE ARRESTED FOR BRINGING ILLEGALLY TO GREECE 16 IRAQIES

Two turks were arrested last night for bringing illegally to Greece 16 iraqi immigrants.

The iraqies had been led on the deserted island of Agathonisi near Kos in south-eastern Aegean.

According to the greek Coast Guard, the two turks Khalil ali Hassan Misrak age 26 and Ruhi Izet Farin age 38 had received 1.500 dollars from each iraqi, 11 men, 3 women and 2 children, in order to bring them to Greece on their boat.

[06] GREEK PRESIDENT CONGRATULATED NEWLY ELECTED POLISH COUNTERPART

President of the Hellenic Republic mr Constantinos Stephanopoulos sent a congratulatory telegram to the newly elected President of the Polish Republic, mr Alexander Kvasniewski.

In the telegram the greek President expresses the belief that the existing relations of friendship and cooperation between Poland and Greece will continue to strengthen and develop in the interest of both peoples.

[07] US PRESIDENTIAL ENVOY =92=8E CYPPUS WILL NOT BRING WITH HIM A PLAN

Cypriot President Glafkos Kliridis stated today that US Presidential envoy Richard Beattie will not bring with him a plan or recommendations for the achievement of progress in the Cyprus problem.

Responding to questions made by reporters President Kliridis stated that mr.Beattie is expected to Cyprus on December 4th for a two-day visit in order to have meetings with him and with turkish-cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Mr. Kliridis said that has no information that the US prefer reaching a preliminary agreement adding that this does not mean that they will get what they want.

The Cypriot President said that in order progress to be achieved there should be convergence of views on the basic issues adding that mr.Beattie will be informed on the positions of the two sides in Cyprus concerning just the basic issues and not the entirety of the solution.

[08] MINORITY DOCTORS FROM ALBANIA RECEIVE FURTHER TRAINING

The National Foundation for the Reception and Rehabilitation of Emigrant and Repatriated Greeks has undertaken the organization and financing of the further training of 7 medical doctors, 6 specialized nurses and 2 administrative employees from the Petros Nakos Hospital in Agii Saranta.

The training will take place in the Regional University Hospital in the north-western city of Ioannina and will be held in the framework of the inter- university training programme for greek minority and albanian scientists.
