    [01] GREEK PRIME MINISTER'S HEALTH CONSIDERED SATISFACTORY

    Doctors treating Greek Prime Minister mr Andreas Papandreou who is in hiospital for a third day today expressed their satisfaction for the improvement the conditions of his health showed.

    The doctors announced that soon the respiratory apparatus which was helping mr Papandreou breathe will be removed and expressed their optimism for his health but declined to commit themselves to a specific date the Prime Minister will exit hospital.

    The doctors have not yet found the virus which caused the pneumonia mr Papandreou has been suffering from but expressed their optimism that they will do so while they added that for the first time there were clear indications that the Prime Minister is responding positively to the fourfold treatment with antibiotics he receives.

    A spokesman for the medical council observing mr Papandreou's condition characterised as a sign of optimism the fact that the first two crucial days passed with the Prime Minister having calm nights and reiterated that the function of his heart and kidneys is satisfactory.

    Mr Papandreou has been treated in the intensive care unit of the Onasion Cardiology Center, one of the best equipped medical institutions in Europe, where he was admitted on Monday with a mild type of pneumonia and today is the first day people closely around him seem relieved.

    Health Minister mr Dimitris Kremastinos who is mr Papandreou's personal doctor had shared this optimism while the medical council thanked the famous egyptian heart surgeon mr Magdi Yacub for the fact that he sent a special medicine for the Prime Minister but as they added this medicine which is in the disposal of the hospital but it is not suitable for mr. Papandreou who, as the doctors underscore, has full understanding of the environment ard the situations around him.

    Press and Media Minister mr Tilemahos Hitiris contradicted that the issue of Mr Papandreou's succession concerns either the governing socialistic PASOK or in the government.

    Mr Hitiris said that the country has a prime minister and that everybody in the party hopes for a quick recovery in the Prime Minister's health.

    As it has been made known yesterday during his stay in the hospital the Prime Minister will be subsituted by the first minister in order according to the law,of government the Minister of the Interior Affairs, Public Administration and Decentralization mr Akis Tsohadjopoulos.

    The Press Minister contradicted that there is a problem in the coordination of the ministers adding that in case there is a necessity for a session of teh cabinet mr Tsohadjopoulos will convoke it.

    Mr Akis Tsohadjopoulos, 60, one of the closest political friends of the Prime Minister ahs been one of the most prominent members of the party and the first secretary of its central committee, position from which he resigned so that he returned to government two months ago.

    Mr Hitiris said that it yet too early to discuss who will speak on behalf of the government in the discussion in the parliament about the 1996 budget or who will head the greek deligation in the European Union Summit, due in Madrid on December 9-10.

    It is reminded that in the Summer summit of 1989 when no government has been formed in the country after the elections, the greek deligation was headed by the then President of the Republic mr Christos Sardjetakis.

    Current President of the Republic mr Constantinos Stephanopoulos visited the Prime Minister in hospital today straight after his return from an offical visit he paid in Bulgaria. As the Press and Media Minister said many foreign leaders have expressed their concern for the condition of mr Papandreou's health. Mr Hitiris made today a special reference to the interest shown by the Soanish Prime Minister mr Felipe Gonzalez, presiding over the European Council for the second semester of 1995.

    As far as it regards economy which seemed to suffer a crisis after the announcement of mr Papandreou's admission in hospital, there have been signs of recovery and a rise in the indicators of the stock exchange market which had marked a fall during the last two days.

    National Economy Minister mr Yannos Papantoniou expressed his satisfaction for the reaction of the investors and reiterated his faith in the effectiveness of the greek economy.

    Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, 77 next February, suffers from a mild from of pneumonia which appeared dangerous since seven years ago, in Septembr 1988, he was submitted in Heartfield hospital in London in an open heart operation, held by dr Yacub.

    Mr Papandreou, leading the socialists returned in office in October 1993 after a break of almost 4.5 years. He was also in office between October 1981 and June 1989.

    A new communique on mr Papandreou's health will be issued tomorrow at noon while late tonight there will be an informal briefing of the journalists by a spokesman of the medical council.

    [02] ATHENS EXPRESS SATISFACTION FOR THE DRAFT AGREEMNET IN DEYTON

    Greece expressed today full satisfaction for the agreement the parties involved in the Yugoslav criris reached in Deyton, Ohaio.

    President of the Hellenic Republic mr Constantinos Stephanopoulos in a reference he made during his speech in the Bulgarian Parliament said that the agreemnt is postitive provided that it reflects the real will of the peoples and it is not forced on them.

    Press and Media Minister mr Tilemahos Hitiris hailed the agreement and expressed the hope that it will lead to a permanent peace for the security and the cooperation in the Balkans.

    [03] GREECE OBSERVES SOLIDARITY WITHIN THE EUROPEAN UNION

    Greece absented from the voting in the United Nations for the condemnation of the French nuclear tests although Athens disagrees with such tests because France asked for the solidarity of the European Union member states, said today the Greek Press and Media Minister mr Tilemahos Hitiris explaining why Greece did not vote againstthe tests despite previous positions adopted by Athens.

    Greece, said mr Hitiris, has in the past asked for the solidariy of the Union member states and observes this principal without taking into account what other member states did in the past.

    [04] GREEK PRESIDENT COMPLETED VISIT IN BULGARIA

    The importance of the construction of the oil pipe- line Burgas-Alexandroupolis and the Egnatia road network was underlined by President of the hellenic Republic mr Constantinos Stephanopoulos in the speech he made in the bulgarian Parliament in Sofia, today, last day of his official visit in Bulgaria.

    The issue of the oil pipe-line and the problems that have been created were discussed during the meeting held yesterday between President Stephanopoulos and bulgarian Prime Minister Jan Videnov. The bulgarian Prime Minister stated to journalists that the problems will be resolved through consultations among experts while at the same time he said that he is optimistic that a solution will be found.

    The greek President also underlined that his visit to Sofia contributed to the strengthening and widening of the greek-bulgarian relations while he reiterated Greece's support to Bulgaria's efforts to become an EU member.

    Mr.Stephanopoulos stated that Greece follows a policy aiming at the creation of a unified Balkan region, which will become part of the European region through the membership of Bulgaria and Romania in the European Union.

    The greek President stressed that the governments in Athens and Sofia must take all the necessary measures in order to facilitate the further development of the business and trade cooperation between the two countries.

    [05] THE PROSPECTS OF THE GREEK ECONOMY

    The European Commission will publish its report on the situation of the economy and it prospects for 1996.

    According to reliable information, in the report is mentioned among others that Greece's economy will be improved during next year. The deficit as a percentage in GNP will drop to 8% by the end of 1996 compared to 8,9% by the end of 1995. Also, the public debt as a percentage in GNP will drop to 114% from 114,4% in 1995.

    Finally, in the report is emphasized that the terms set for Greece's convergence programme are being fulfiled.

    [06] NEW EFFORT FOR SOLUTION OF CYPRUS PROBLEM BY US NEXT YEAR

    The United States will undertake a decisive effort for the solution of the Cyprus problem next year, according to statements made today by US ambassador to Cyprus Richard Baucher after his meeting with Cypriot President Glafkos Kliridis.

    The US ambassador said that the US Presidential envoy Richard Beattie will visit Cyprus in early December in order to study the whole situation and to have talks with the country's political leadership aiming at setting the basis for achieving progress in the Cyprus problem in 1996.

    The american ambassador also welcomed the agreement for Bosnia and confirmed an earlier statement made by US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Holbook that now he will be able to deal unobstructed with the Cyprus problem. He also stated that the United States continue to work toward reaching a solution for the Cyprus problem.
