Doctors treating mr Papandreou, 77 next February, confirmed the problem but they are expected to announce the results of their examinations at about eight o clock local time tonight. The situation in Athens remains calm and the Press and Media Minister mr Tilemahos Hitiris called on the journalists to be careful to what they transmit to the public. Mr Hitiris who was referring to information that mr Papandreou's situation is critical, characterized it as one "under control" while the Education Minister mr Georgios Papandreou who is the Prime Minister's son, did not make any comments but said simply that everything is under control. Many supporters of the party have gathered outside the hospital which is considered as one of the best equipped in Europe while almost all prominent members of the party and the greek political life visited the hospital as well. Among those was ex-Prime Minister with now main opposition party of New Democracy mr Georgios Rallis. The supporters booed governmental PASOK MP and ex- European Union commissioner ms Vasso Papandreou who recently has appeared very critical to mr Papandreou. President of the main opposition party of New Democracy is informed on the situation by the Health Minister mr Dimitris Kremastinos who has been treating mr papndreou after 1988 when he had the open heart operation in the hospital of Heartfield in London. President of the minor opposition party of Political Spring visited the hospital himself so that he be informed personally on the situation, while all other political leaders are being continouslyu informed by the Minister of State and one of the very close friends of the Prime Minister's mr Antonis Livanis. Mr Papandreou has been the Prime Minister for almost 10 years after winning general elections three times, in October 1981, June 1985 and October 1993. [02] GUARDS ENTERED KORIDALOS PRISON AND ASSESS DAMAGES OF UPRISINGGroups of prison guards assess the damages in the Koridalos Prison caused during the inmates' riot which lasted five days and ended yesterday leaving four dead and dozens injured. Also, the prison guards are trying to collect all the hand-made weapons the inmates have in their possession. According to information, the damages will be video taped and they will be examined by a group of prosecutors who will bring charges against those responsible. Meanwhile, an urgent preliminary investigation was ordered by the Prosecutor's office to determine the exact causes and circumstances under which the 27yearold inmate Dimitris Karamoutis was brutally murdered by his fellow inmates. The coroner stated that the circumstances of the inmate's death were "barbaric" saying that Karamoutis had been savagely beaten, stabbed 23 times and then hanged upside-down before being set on fire. [03] TRIAL OF ANARCHISTS WHO HAD SEIZED THE POLYTECHNIC STARTEDThe first 137 of about 400 anarchists, arrested after causing extensive damages in the Polytechnic building in Athens last Friday on the 22nd anniversary of the students uprising against the military junta, will be tried today. Some 300 youths are expected to be charged in relation to the violent clashes between the anarchists and the riot police that took place on Friday night while 94 minors have been released. Police evacuated the Polytechnic and arrested 473 anarchists after receiving permission by university officials who approved the police operation in order to stop the self-styled anarchists from causing further damages to the building of the Polytechnic School. [04] THE GREEK PRESIDENT BEGINS HIS VISIT TO BULGARIAPresident of the Hellenic Republic mr Constantinos Stephanopoulos left today for Sofia for talks with his bulgarian counterpart mr Zeliu Zelev and Prime Minister mr Jan Videnov on bilateral relations and on the situation in the Balkans. The bulgarian President stated that his greek counterpart's visit will give a new boost to the improvement of the greek-bulgarian relations. |
