Mr.Athanasakis said that mr.Baikal's positions, according to which Ankara regards the Cyprus issue as its national issue and that is not going to abandon the turkish-cypriots under any pressure, are describing the policy of unilateral turkish claims against Greece. Greece, said mr.Athanasakis, referring to the Cyprus problem, believes that this problem is the key to the normalization and the improvement of the greek- turkish relations. He also reiterated the greek position, according to which the only dispute between the two countries is the continental shelf issue which Greece has proposed to be brought to the International Court of Justice but Turkey systematically rejects the idea for a number of years. Mr.Athanasakis added that for this reason Turkey should not blame Greece for its problems with the European Union and also should stop trying to export its internal problems. The greek government spokesman also referred to the statements made by turkish Prime Minister Tansu Ciller which he pointed out are different from those made by mr. Baikal. Mr.Athanasakis said that from all the statements made by mrs.Ciller he kept the part in which she admits that Turkey blocked the process promoted by the UN Secretary General for the solution of the Cyprus problem.
