    [01] GOVERNMENT COVERS EX-PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC

    Greek Press and Media Vice Minister mr Nikos Athanassakis expressed today the government's full agreement with the statement ex-President of the Hellenic Republic mr Constantinos Karamanlis made about the summit of the political party leaders which did not take place in early 1993, despite the wish expressed by the then Prime Minister mr Constantinos Mitsotakis.

    In a statement, sources near Mr Karamanlis made it was stressed that the President of the Republic can not call such a summit which is not provided in the constitution whoever asks for it and added that he could not call it after the president of then opposition and now Prime Minister mr Andreas Papandreou had rejected the idea.

    Mr Athanassakis did not exclude the eventuality that the government decides to ask for a new summit of the political party leaders provided that the circumstances are suitable for such a meeting.

    [02] GREEK PRESIDENT CONTINUES OFFICIAL VISIT IN ROMANIA

    Romanian President mr. Ion Iliescu stated today addressing the President of the Hellenic republic mr Constantinos Stephanopoulos who is on an official visit in Bucharest that an axis of stability in this part of the world can be built based on the grecoromanian friendship.

    Mr. Iliescu speaking in the formal reception that was given by greek ambassador in Romania mr Christos Alexandris, he reiterated his country's political will to strengthen and continue the greek-romanian friendship in all sectors in order to safeguard stability, peace and security in the Balkans and in Europe.

    The greek President met this morning Romanian Prime Minister mr Nicolae Vacaroiu with whom he discussed issues concerning the greek-romanian relations.

    Mr. Stephanopoulos assured the romanian Prime Minister that Athens will continue to offer its support to the efforts made by the Bucharest government to place the country among the euro-atlantic structures.

    Mr.Vacaroiu speaking to greek journalists pointed out that NATO can play an important role to the preservation of peace in the region and in Europe stating that conflicts like the one in former Yugoslavia can be avoided in the region through the North Atlantic Alliance.

    The romanian Prime Minister referred to the existing dispute between Bucharest and Sofia over the construction of a bridge across the river Danube and expressed the wish that this difference will be settled.

    This afternoon the Foreign Ministers of Greece, mr.Papoulias and Romania, mr. Malescanu will sign a greek-romanian education agreement and later mr.Stephanopoulos and mr.Iliescu will give a joint press conference. In the evening, the greek President will meet with representatives of the greek community and the greek students attending romanian Universities while he will also meet and with Patriarch Theoktistos of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

    [03] DEPUTY SERB PM PROMOTES ESTABLISHMENT OF ASSOCIATION OF FACULTIES

    The establishment of an Association of Faculties of Economics in the Balkans that will be based in Thessaloniki is being promoted by Deputy Prime Minister of the serb government and Minister of Science and Technology mr.Slobodan Unkovic. According to his statement to MPA, this idea was discussed today during his visit to the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki and very soon will be materialized.

    Mr. Unkovic stressed that during next month's visit to Belgrade by greek Minister of Education Giorgos Papandreou will be discussed issues concerning the full cooperation between the greek and serb Universities and also the issue of the establishment of serb language courses in the Universities in Athens and Thessaloniki. Mr.Unkovic stressed that since October 1st is being offered a modern greek language course in Belgrade's School of Philosophy.

    [04] GREEK-YUGOSLAV COOPERATION WILL BE DISCUSSED IN BELGRADE

    Serb Minister of Trade and Tourism mr.Sirdijan Nikolic in a press conference on the occasion of New Yugoslavia's participation to the tourism exhibition "Philoxenia" held in Thessaloniki stated that his government believes that the Port of Thessaloniki will be as important for New Yugoslavia as it was before the embargo adding that the prospects of cooperation are great due to Greece's geo-political and strategic position.

    The prospects for the future cooperation of the two countries will be further discussed next month in Belgrade during the visit by a greek government delegation in which will participate Tourism Minister Nikos Sifounakis and Minister of Macedonia-Thrace Kostas Triaridis. Mr.Nikolic met with the two ministers during his visit to Greece and they came to the conclusion that there will be greater cooperation especially after the embargo is lifted.

    Mr.Nikolic also said that in Belgrade's meeting is expected to be resolved and the issue of the abolition of the visa requirement in both countries which will facilitate cooperation and tourism.

    [05] THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE PRESIDENT WILL VISIT ATHENS

    A General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees will be held in Athens in the framework of events that will begin on November 10th marking the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games.

    Among the high ranking officials from 49 european states who will attend the two-day event will be and International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch.

    [06] THE GREEK EDUCATION MINISTER WILL ADDRESS UNESCO MEETING IN PARIS

    Greek Education Minister Giorgos Papandreou arrived in Paris yesterday to participate in the events for the 28th UNESCO General Convention.

    Mr.Papandreou heads a greek delegation and in his speech will deal with the great problems facing humanity while he will also underline Greece's role and contribution to the promotion of the international organization's efforts.
