    [01] PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OPENS CENTRE FOR THE GREEK LANGUAGE

    President of the Hellenic Reoublic mr Constantinos Stephanopoulow opened today the Centre of the Greek Language which was established by the Faculty of the Greek language of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

    Mr Stephanopoulos characterised the establishment of the Centre as fulfilling of an elementary obligation towards the greeks abroad and stressed that the teaching of the greek language to foreigners which should spread.

    Minister of Education mr Giorgos Papandreou who attended the opening said that the establishment fo the centre is due to the fact that tthere has been a consensus among all the parties and said that the language is part of the greek tradition which is the base of the european civilization.

    President of the Centre, professor Maronitis, stressed that the problem of the lingual education in Greece was faced more as an ideological complex and less as a real issue depending on the relative sciences.

    The Centre intends to publish soon the "History of the Greek Language" and make a chart of all places where greek is taught abroad.

    In Thessaloniki is was highly estimated that the President of the Republic, during his stay in the city for the manifestations for the liberation of teh city from the Turks inn 1912, honoured three of the most important poets of the city, ms Zoe careli, mr Giorgos Vafopoulos, 92, today and mr Takis Varvichiotis.

    [02] CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM FOR THE RIGHT TO ESTABLISH UNIVERITIES

    Insitutions of the public sector, such as the local administration and univerities themselves will get the right to establish universities if the parliament accept the suggestions made by the ministry of education said today the Minister of Education mr Giorgos Papandreou.

    Mr Papandreou declined to comment whether his suggestions will include suggestions made by the main opposition party of New Democracy providing for the right for the foundation of universities to the private sector.

    President of the main opposition party of New Democracy mr Miltiades Evert, after visiting the rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, accused the government of having deceived the universities.

    [03] APPEALS TO DEMETRES CHOVOLAS TO STAY IN PASOK

    A series of importants members of the governing socialistic PASOK launched today appeals to ex-finance Minister mr Demetres Tsovolas, to stay with the party and not abandod it as he seems to intend after his resignation from the central committee of the party where in April 1994 he was elected third,a fter late Giorgos Yenimatas and also resigned Theodoros Pangalos.

    Among those who appealed to mr Tsovolas were the Education Minister mr Giorgos Papandreou and many MPs, some of whom did not exclude the eventuality that they follow him in a new party provided that Andreas Papandreou has left the leadership of the government.

    Mr Tsovolas who blames for the present situation oin the party all those having taken part in its leadership, said that he will soon announce his decisions and announced that he will make a tour all over Greece.

    [04] THE GERMAN INDEMNITIES ARE A MAJOR ISSUE FOR THE GREEK PEOPLE

    The german war indemnities and the occupation loan are major issues for all the greeks who suffered and died in the anti-fascist struggle during the german occupation, stated greek Foreign Ministry spokesman ambassador Constantinos Bikas. The statement was made when he was asked to comment on the decision of the german Foreign Ministry to return as legally groundless about 1.000 indemnity suits filed by greek citizens against the german state.

    Mr.Bikas stated that beyond the legal and political dimensions of the issue there is a huge moral issue on which the german government must express its position.

    [05] A NEW US INITIATIVE ON CYPRUS IN THE BEGINNING OF 1996

    Ways that will lead to the revival of talks on the Cyprus problem were examined last night in New York by Cypriot Foreign Minister Alekos Michailidis and US assistant Secretary of State Richard Hollbrook.

    Responding to questions by reporters on whether the effort made concerns procedural issues and not the essence of the problem, mr.Hollbrook said that there is no such separation in the Cyprus problem.

    According to the correspondent of the Cypriot State Radio in New York, mr.Michailidis insinuated that the new US initiative on Cyprus will be undertaken in early 1996. Also, it was reported that is not ruled out the posibility of a tour in the region by US Presidential envoy Richard Beattie to take place around Christmas.

    Earlier, mr.Michailidis had met with the adviser of President Clinton on national security issues mr.Antony Lake to whom he stressed the need of setting a concrete timetable providing for all the stages for the de- militarization of Cyprus.

    [06] ANCIENT ARTIFACTS IN HOUSE OF UK VICE-CONSUL IN CHANIA,CRETE

    Fifteen ancient artifacts the value of which will be determined by archaeologists were found yesterday by police in the city of Chania in the southern Aegean island of Crete. The ancient artifacts were found in the house of the british vice-consul in Chania, John Leight Krakston, age 65 and according to his statements they were sent to him from abroad without mentioning the country of their origin.

    Mr.Krakston is a permanent resident of Chania for the past 20 years and was appointed british vice-consul in 1992.

    Police arrested the british vice-consul but later was released after a decision by the prosecutor until the preliminary investigation is completed.

    [07] GREECE OBSERVES RULES ON EXPORTS TO COUNTRIES NEIGHBOURING F.R.Y.

    Greece strictly observes the rules set by the international community on the issue of exports made to third countries neighbouring with former Yugoslavia, siad today the greek Foreign Ministry spokesman ambassador Constantinos Bikas when asked to comment on publications according to which Greece violates the rules concerning the exports of goods to countries neighbouring with former Yugoslavia.
