[01] NO INTERVENTION IN FOREIGN POLICY BY PRESIDENT SAYS GOVERNMENT

Greek Press and Media Vice Minister mr Nikos Athanasakis rejected today the idea that the comments made by the President of the Hellenic Republic mr Constantinos Stephanopoulos on the eventuality of a compromise with FYROM on the name this country will be recognised under, constitute an intervention in the greek foreign policy.

The government does not feel that it should comment on the statements made by the President of the Republic, said mr Athanasakis who reiterated that Greece enters the bilateral dialogue with FYROM with its known positions, stressing that this is what was said by mr Stephanopoulos.

The Minister called the journalists to read again the text of the interview mr Stephanopoulos gave in New York.

Referring to the continuing talks between the greek and the FYROM delegations, the greek government spokesman characterised their atmpsphere as constructive and the settlements reached in the framework of the interim New York agreement as completely successful.

The goals set by the greek side since the beginning of these talks have been fulfilled said mr Athanassakis.

The third round of talks concerning especially the establishment of the liasion offices of the two countries in each other's capital and the transportation regulations are expected tomorrow.

[02] FIRST SHIPMENT FOR FYROM ARRIVED IN THE PORT OF THESSALONIKI

The first after the lifting of the greek measures ship with cargo for FYROM arrived today in the port of Thessaloniki, coming from the belgian port of Andwerp carrying minerals.

The unloading of the ship will be held tomorrow and its transportation to its destination, the city of Titov Velez in Central FYROM will be take place by rail.

As greek rail authorities stated, there are 42000 tonnes of oil for FYROM remain in the border station of Idomeni since the oil companies do not carry on with its transportation waiting for instructions from the ministry of of trade.

[03] UP TO THE EUR.COMMISSION THE WITHDRAWAL OF APPEAL AGAINST ATHENS

Greek Vice Minister of Press and Media and government spokesman mr Nikos Athanasakis commented on the press publications concerning the fate of the European Commission's appeal to the European Court of Justice against Greece over the measures imposed on Skopje by reiterating the comments made earlier by greek Foreign Minister mr Carolos Papoulias.

Mr. Papoulias had stated on September 24th, effectively challenging the European Commission, that it has an obligation to finish what it had started adding that Greece can not be left with the stigma of the violator.

Mr. Athanasakis clarified that Greece will never request or provoke in any way the withdrawal of the European Commission's appeal, stressing that this is an issue of the Commission.

[04] GREEK-FYROM ECONOMIC COOPERATION STARTED

A business delegation of Thessaloniki's Professional Chamber will visit Skopje next month and later there will be a similar visit to Greece by Skopje's respective Chamber.

President of Thessaloniki's Professional Chamber mr. Themistoklis Nikolaidis stated that the visit aims at examining ways for business cooperation between the two sides and added that representatives of tourist agents and hotel owners from Thessaloniki will also participate in the delegation.

General director of the federation of the North Greek industries said today that the market of FYROM needs foodstuff, drinks and chemical products, adding that the relevant negotiations have already taken place and expressing the hope that soon the the market of the neighbouring country will be full of greek products.

[05] GREECE AND BULGARIA OPTIMISTIC ABOUT OIL PIPELINE

Issues concerning security in the Balkans, the development of the peace process in former Yugoslavia and the region's economic reconstruction were discussed in the meeting the Bulgarian Defence Minister mr Dimitar Pavlov had in Athens with the alternate greek Foreign Minister mr Giorgos Romeos. Political circles in the greek capital characterized the meeting that lasted for an hour, as a friendly and constructive discussion.

Among the issues discussed was the one of the oil pipe-line which will bring Russian oil from the bulgarian port of Burgas in the Black Sea to the greek port of Alexandroupolis in thw Aegean Sea.Both ministers expressed their optimism that soon an agreement of the three countries interested in the issue will be signed.

Mr. Pavlov and mr. Romeos stated that the completion of the Egnatia Road Network which will connect the Ionian Sea with the Grecoturkish border, will strengthen the communication between the Balkan and the European countries, a fact that interests both sides.

The Greek minister assured mr. Pavlov that Greece will continue to support the aid to Bulgaria through the European Union programmes of PHARE and INTERREG.

[06] THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH WILL VISIT THESSALONIKI NEXT MAY

The Ecumenical Patriarch mr Vartholomeos, who last week became honourary president of Thessaloniki's Bar Association, will visit the city in May of 1996 in order to chair a special meeting of the Association.

The news was confirmed by the Ecumenical Patriarch during a ceremony last week in Constantinople in which he was proclaimed honourary president of Thessaloniki's Bar Association.

[07] OVER 6% OF THE GREEK POPULATION HAS DEPRESSION SYMPTOMS

Six out of 100 greeks present depression symptoms in some period of their lives while the numbers increase in the middle-aged and the elderly.

Over 6% of the general population has symptoms of depression while the middle-aged and the elderly, especially women, suffer more often by depression compared to other age groups.

According to figures provided by the World Health Organization, depression hits 1 out of 4 women while among men the percentage is lower. Symptoms of depression appear only in 1 out of 10 men.

Based on scientific data, only 4 in 10 depression sufferers have visited a doctor while the rest avoid seeing one and stay without professional help.

The contemporary views on depression are being discussed today in Thessaloniki where the scientific symposium of the Greek Psychiatry Society is being held with the participation of Psychiatry professors from the United States, Britain and Greece.

Depression is characterized by anxiety, fatigue, change in eating habits, unstable psychological condition during the day and social isolation tendencies. Also, there are physical symptoms such as chest pains, difficulty in breathing, headaches and back pains which stem from psychological reasons.

The medical science, according to its representatives, can fight depression with the new generations of anti-depressant medicines which offer greater safety limits compared to the earlier types of those drugs.

[08] FILM DIRECTOR P.VOULGARIS IN NEW YORK'S MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

New York's Museum of Modern Art makes a special presentation of greek film director Pantelis Voulgaris which begins today and will last until October 26th.

This event is a continuation of the successful cooperation between the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Greek Cinema Center which started in 1989 with a presentation of films by another greek director, Thanasis Angelopoulos.

In the special presentation of director Pantelis Voulgaris will be shown a total of ten films which cover the period 1965-1995. After New York mr.Voulgaris' work will be presented in Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago.
