[01] STEPHANOPOULOS:GREECE DOES NOT ACCEPT PRESSURE

Greece accepts advice but does not accept pressure, said today the President of the Hellenic Republic mr Constantinos Stephanopoulos from New York where he will take part in the manifestations for the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations.

When asked about the eventuality of a United States mediation for a solution in the grecoturkish dispute, mr Stephanopoulos said that the role US play all over the world is a role of peace and added that he understands the difficulties Washington has when US are to mediate between friends and allies underscoring that he does not forget that president Clinton promised to look for a solution in the issue.

The Greek President admitted that the role of the US helped towards a solution in the problems between Greece and FYROM and said that he hoped for a compromise on the issue of the name of the name FYROM will be officially recognised noting that Greece enters in the dialogue on the issue keeping its well-known positions. stating that the so called "macedonia" should show that they may go back form the position they enter the dialogue with.

Mr Stephanopoulos said that he accepted the explanations given by the NATO claiming inexistense of the document with the plan for an autonomous Thrace stressing that there is no margin for suspension on the issue. The President said that he did not think that there existed a problem in the orthodox church of North and South America announcing that he will meet archbishop Iakovos as well as the Patriarchical Exarchate which has been sent to the American Orthodox Church by the Ecumenical Patriarch.

In the States mr Stephanopoulos will address the General Assembly of the United Nations and he will attend the reception president Clinton will give in the honour of the foreign leaders while he will give a spech in the Harvard university on the greek political positions which as he said "have been misunderstood".

The President praised the role of the US citizens of Greek origin stressing that everybody knows how they are used in crucial for the greek interests moments.

[02] THE GREEK-FYROM TALKS RESUMED IN ATHENS TODAY

The new round of talks in application of the interim agreement signed by Greece and FYROM in New York on September 13th, and the memorandum on the practical measures in its application, resumed today in Athens at the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Transport and Communications.

The first day of the talks which were held in a good climate, ended in the afternoon and they are expected to be last till Friday.

The main topic of the talks in the Foreign Ministry concerns the settlement of the issues concerning the establishment of diplomatic offices in Athens and Skopje. The problem that must be resolved concerns the name that will be written on the sign in front of the building that will house FYROM's liaison office. Greece remains firm to its position that the name writen on the sign must be "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" (FYROM) while the FYROM want the name "Macedonia".

The committees of experts which will meet ta the Transport Minister will examine issues of technical nature concerning the transportation of goods and individuals and the transportation documents of goods and cars.

The discussions on those issues will be based on the memorandum signed by the two sides in Skopje last Friday after five days of talks held both in the neighbouring country and in Athens.

Meanwhile, talks will begin in the following days between the two sides concerning the sectors of postal service, railways and tele-communications.

The FYROM deligation under assistasnt foreign minister mr Liupco Arsovsi consisting of one Assistant Minister and two vice-Ministers arrived in Athens early in the morning by rail.

[03] A GREEK SCIENTIST IN AUSTRALIA HELPS THE BLIND TO READ

The electronic system "Ulysses", perfected recently by University researcher mr Michalis Skordilis, offers "sight and voice" to the blind. Mr.Skordilis, who is of greek descent, works in the University of Melbourne in Australia and maintains that is a very significant discovery and a pioneer programme.

Mr. Skordilis stated that Greece and Cyprus are very interested in the programme as it is the only one which can "read" greek. Voice is produced in the greek language through a scanner and a personal computer. The scanner "reads" greek texts, from Homer to newspaper articles, and the personal computer reproduces them in greek voice. This way the blind have the opportunity to "read" by listening.
