Mr Papandreou condemned the amoralism, which according to the Prime Minister, is called policy while he said that everybody who would like to break PASOK should try to do it and see the results in the polls. Mr Papandreou said that he will not stand being a prime minister under tuition, term by which he referred to a suggestion made by MP ms Vasso Papandreou who doubted his ability to govern. [02] EX-MINISTER LEAVES PASOKAfter mr Papandreou's speech, ex - Economy Minister mr Dimitris Chovolas who had challenged mr Akis Tsohadjopoulos as a secretary of the central committee in July 1994 submitted his resignation from the central committee and the party as well. Mr Chovolas accused the Prime Minister of ridiculing the institutions of the party and of applying a policy with no common points with the programme PASOK had promised to apply in the 1993 elections. It is not excluded that mr Chovolas, who had been tried alongside mr Papandreou in the supreme court in 1989, may proceed to establishing a new party. In a speech he had programmed to make today, Mr Chovolas accused the leadership of PASOK of having no diffference with the mani opposition party fo BNew Democracy, shouting "who governs this place". Dimitris Chovolas, a lawyer in profession was born in Arta Epirus in the 50s.He was first elected in parliament in 1981 and he was reelected in 1985 and twice in 1989. In the 1990 elections he was elected first in the second periphery of Athens but lost his place in the parliament after he was sentenced to 2.5 imprisonment and loss of his civil rights. His place in the parliament was covered after elections which PASOK won against no opponent. In a statement he made after ex-minister's resignation mr Papandreou expressed his sorrrow for it calling him to withdraw it, stressing that mr Chovolas is honoured in PASOK. Ex - Minister Mr Constantinos Simitis whose resignation from the government last September had accelerated the reshuffle accused the Prime Minister of denying the reality stressing that all leaders have the privilige to choose when to leave while he contradicted that he will seek a political future outside PASOK. Ms Vasso Papandreou ex-minister and exEuropean Union Commissioner, political friend of mr Simitis's said that her positions were misjudged by the Prime Minister and added that they will look for a new PASOK to build. [03] NEW SECRETARY FOR PASOK CENTRAL COMMITTEEEx - Interior Minister mr Constantinos Scandalidis, MP of the Dodekanese, South East Aegean Sea, was elected today with a wide majority in the position of the Secretary of the Central Committee of the governing Socialistic party PASOK in replacement of mr Akis Tsohadjopoulos who had to leave the place after he entered government in the recent resshufle. Mr Scandalidis got 111 votes out of the 150 member committee while 34 casted a white ballot and 5 were absent.In 1993 Mr Tsohadjopoulos had got 103 votes, and his then opponent mr Chovolas 13 while 32 members had casted a white ballot According to the statute of the party the secretary of the central committee can not hold a place in the government. Alongside the vote for a new secretary, the central committee voted for the new 19-member executive bureau of the party. Ex-secretary of the party mr Tsohadjopoulos was elected first in the new bureau, followed by ex minister and member of the outgoing bureau mr Yannis Souladakis, minister of the environment mr Constantinso Laliotis, speaker of the parliament mr Apostolos Kaklamanis, Defense Minister mr Yerassimos Arsenis, state minister and close friend of the Prime Minister mr Andonis Livanis, Transport Minister mr Evangelos Venizelos, and Labour Minister mr Stephanos Djoumakas. Prominent members of the party as MPs and the ex-ministers mr Constantinos Simitis and ms Vasso Papandreou, MEP mr Paraskevas Avgerinos as well as three more members of the outgoing bureau and about ten members of the cebtral committee declined to stand for election in the new executive bureau. A suggestion made by seven members of the body that all prominent mambers and prospective successors of Mr Papandreiuy take part in the new bureau was not accepted by the body. [04] EX-PREMIER SAYS HE WOULD BE PREMIER AGAIN IF HE HAD NOT RESIGNEDEx-Prime Minister mr Constantinos Mitsotakis said today in his second part of an interview with the revue "Economic Mailman" that if he had not resigned after his defeat in the 1993 elections he would be prime minister again now. Mr Mitsotakis had lost the lections leading the then governmental party of New Democracy and after the elections he resigned and mr Miltiades Evert was elected as president.Mr Evert did not make any comment on the interview despite his dissaproval which was expressed by people around him. [05] SECOND ROUND OF THE GREEK-FYROM TALKS CONTINUE IN SKOPJEThe second round of talks between Greece and FYROM for the implementation of the interim agreement signed by the two countries in New York continues for a second day in Skopje. The head of the skopjan delegation, mr.Arsofski stated that the talks are taking place in an atmosphere of good will comming from both sides, while the head of the greek delegation, ambassador Dimitris Kipreos expressed optimism concerning the completion of the necessary discussions. In Athens, greek government spokesman Tilemachos Hitiris stated yesterday that the measures against FYROM will be lifted on October 15th, when the interim agreement between the two countries will come into effect. Regarding the goods destined for Skopje which are being kept in storage areas in the Port of Thessaloniki, mr.Hitiris clarified that they are still stored there as the second meeting of the two delegations are still in progress. [06] BULGARIAN INTEREST FOR COOPERATION WITH BUSINESSES IN KAVALABulgarian businessmen showed strong interest for cooperation with businesses from Kavala in north-eastern Greece, based on figures provided by the exhibition of products from this city organized for a third year by the Chamber of Kavala. According to the President of the city's Chamber, Apostolos Mardiris half of the 45 businesses participating in the exhibition have some kind of cooperation with bulgarian businesses. The bulgarian interest is also evident by the large number of trade visitors, and representatives of businesses and Chambers of Commerce from the neighbouring country. The bulgarian interest focuses mainly on food products but also on paints, marble, clothes and shoes. [07] GREENPEACE'S SHIP THE "ALTAIR" CONTINUES ITS ANTI-NUCLEAR CAMPAIGNThe ship "Altair" of the ecological organization GREENPEACE continues its anti-nuclear campaign in greek ports. The ship arrived in the port of Patras, in southern Greece today after visiting the cities of Thessaloniki, Volos, Pireaus, Iraklion and Chania. Tomorrow, the members of GREENPEACE will give a joint press conference with the mayor of Patras on the issue of nuclear testing. The tour of the "Altair" in the Mediterranean aims at informing the people over the continuing nuclear tests and at strengthening the international protest movement against nuclear testing. In Greece, over 170 municipalities have responded positively to the calls by GREENPEACE and they have condemned the nuclear tests. In tomorrow's joint press conference details will be made public concerning the latest developments and the international reactions to the french government's persistence to go on with nuclear testing in the south Pacific. [08] 8TH MEDITERRANEAN CONFERENCE OF CARDIOLOGY AND HEART SURGERYThe 8th Mediterranean Conference of Cardiology and Heart Surgery opens in Limassol tomorrow with the participation of 1.000 representatives from 36 countries. The main topics that will be discussed in the conference will be modern methods for the diagnosis of cardiopathy, with special emphasis on the break throughs in heart surgery and heart transplants. In the conference will also be presented the importance of nitrous medicines used in cases of coronary disease and cardiac insufficiency. Also, there will be a large exhibition of medicines and medical equipment with the participation of european and US companies. [09] INCREASE OF CANCER CASES IN EUROPEAccording to figures released yesterday during the 8th European Week Against Cancer, the deaths from cancer increased in Greece from 18.000 in 1993 to 19.000 in 1994. Based on epidimiology figures, in 1990 were reported 1.3 million new cases of cancer in Europe while one in three EU residents will be hit by cancer at some point of his or her life. According to the same figures, cancer is the most frequent cause of death and is responsible for a quarter of all deaths in Europe. According to experts, early detection of some forms of cancer can lead to complete recovery while cancer can be prevented by quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, avoiding extensive exposure to the sun rays and following a diet rich in fibre, fruits and vegetables. [10] ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH VARTHOLOMEOS WILL VISIT AUSTRALIA NEXT YEAREcumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos will make an official visit to Australia on November 10-26 next year, according to an announcement made yesterday by the Archbishopric in Australia. The Ecumenical Patriarch will attend events marking the 10th anniversary since the establishment of the St.Andreas Theology School while he will also visit and New Zealand. |
