[01] CRUCIAL SESSION OF PASOK CENTRAL COMMITTEE

PASOK is going to have tomorrow a really crucial session of its central committee which will decide on the election of its new secretary in replacement of mr Akis Tsohadjopoulos who according to the party statute can not keep the place after he has entered the government in the recent reshuffle.

The main point of discussion is whether prominent members of the party who do not take part in the government will deposit their candidature for the new executive bureau of the party which will also be elected tomorrow.

Ex- Ministers Constantinos Simitis and Theodoros Pangalos who resigned from the body belong to this category as well as ex-European Union commissioner ms Vasso Papandreou.

Political circles in Athens say thta the cliamate in the governing socialistic party is described as grave since according to polls, if there were elections now, just two years after PASOK's victory in 1993, the main opposition party of New Democracy would have a five-point lead from PASOK while ND president mr Miltiades Evert and ms Vasso Papandreou share the most positive opinions on the best to be the prime minister.

Mr Nikos Constantopoulos, president of the party of the coalition of the left which does not have any MPs in the national parliament is looked upon positively by one in two voters while the presidents Andreas Papandreou of PASOK, Miltiades Evert of New Democracy and Antonis Samaras of Political Spring have the positive opinion of one in three voters.

Meanwhile the second round of negoatiations between Athens and Scopje will continue tomorrow in a good climate as sources in the capital of FYROM comment after the first day of this second round, held there.

In Athens mr Theodoros Pangalos, MP and ex- minister paid tribute to the parliament and the President of FYROM for their mediocre approach with which they faced "greek screams" and isolated nationalistic forces.

Ex-Minister expressed the opinion that the issue of the name of FYROM which remains the main issue of dispute between the two countries will never be solved because there will never be found a common point.
