    [01] LETTER BY US PRESIDENT CLINTON TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE US HOUSE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE ON THE GREEK-TURKISH DISPUTE IN THE AEGEAN

    Dialogue and compromise wants the US President for the solution of the greek- turkish dispute regarding the territorial waters in the Aegean Sea as it is stressed in the letter President Clinton has sent to the Chairman of the US House Foreign Relations Committee, Benzamin Gilman.

    Sharing the concern expressed by mr.Gilman, President Clinton characteristically mentions in his letter that the tension in the relations between Athens and Ankara could have catastrophic effect on the US interests.

    President Clinton also assures the US House Representative that the United States will continue to follow closely the developments in the Aegean and that will use her influence to convince the two governments to solve their differencies peacefully.

    [02] THE GREEK PRESIDENT WILL VISIT THE UNITED STATES ON OCTOBER 17TH

    Greek President of the Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos will leave on October 17th for New York to attend the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.

    On October 19th the greek President will visit Boston and will speak in the University of Harvard, while on October 20th he will return to New York to attend the celebrations organized by the United Nations. President Stephanopoulos will return to Athens on October 23rd.

    [03] FYROM REOPENED ITS BORDERS WITH ITS NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES

    FYROM reopened its borders with its neighbouring countries that were temporarily closed yesterday for security reasons after the assassination attempt on skopjan President Gligorov that took place yesterday morning in the center of the city of Skopje.

    President Gligorov was seriously injured and his driver was killed when a bomb placed in a parked car exploded as the President's car was passing by.

    Meanwhile, FYROM's assistant Foreign Minister Lupco Arsofski, heading the skopjan delegation participating in the talks with the greek side, stated that the discussions will continue.

    The statement was made after a short meeting with greek Foreign Minister Karolos Papoulias in the presence of ambassador Dimitris Kipreos, head of the greek delegation.

    The talks between the skopjan and the greek delegation continued for a second day today in the Foreign Ministry building in Athens after the Papoulias-Arsofski meeting.

    [04] A GROUP OF PASOK DEPUTIES PROPOSED THE NAME "CENTRAL BALKAN REPUBLIC" FOR FYROM

    With a letter to the President of the greek Parliament 11 deputies of the governing party of PASOK proposed the name of "Central Balkan Republic" for FYROM.

    In their letter they mention that if their proposal is accepted the greek government will immediately start the processes for this country's accession in the European Union.

    The proposal is signed by the deputies, Christos Kipouros, Ilias Vlachopoulos, Athanasios Dimitrakopoulos, Antonis Drosoyiannis, Manolis Papastephanakis, Christos Magoufis, Anestis Saatsoglou, Pantelis Tsertikidis, Leonidas Tzannis, Dimitris Tsentines and Paraskevas Fountas.

    [05] THE 9TH INFOSYSTEM - HI TECH EXHIBITION OPENED TODAY IN THESSALONIKI

    The 9th INFOSYSTEM - HI TECH Exhibition, the international exhibition on information systems and high technology products, opened today in Thessaloniki. The exhibition will remain open until October 8th.

    In the Exhibition participate 408 exhibitors from Greece and 16 other countries. The 238 greek exhibitors are from many greek cities while the 170 foreign exhibitors come from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, the United States, Japan, Ireland, Spain, Israel, Italy, Luxemburg, Britain, Holland, Singapore, Sweden and the Far East Trade Center.

    [06] THE VISIT OF GREEK PRESIDENT TO ROMANIA WAS POSTPONED TO BE HELD IN NOVEMBER

    The governments of Romania and Greece have decided to postpone until early November the formal visit of greek President Kostis Stephanopoulos to Romania that was scheduled to take place on October 5-7.

    The announcement was made today by the romanian Foreign Ministry without explaining the reasons that led to the postponment of the visit.
