The 1st Pan-British conference of all the Hellenic (Greek and Cypriot) students in UK Universities has successfully taken place at the Student Union at Scraptoft Campus of De Montfort University in Leicester during the weekend of 10th- 11th May 1997

The twenty five (25) participating Hellenic Societies, from 25 different Universities across Britain, discussed and voted the Union's constitution. They decided on the Union's name: Union of Hellenic Societies in the UK (E.E.F.K.ME.B.). During the second day they voted for its first committee which is the following:

President: Anastasios A. Mexas (De Montfort) Secretary: Christos Patsalidis (Hull) Treasurer: Elena Paraschopoulou (Sheffield) Educational Officer: Christos Sideris (Plymouth) Political & Cultural Officer: Theologos Koufakis (Reading)

It is the first time after several decades that a national body of Hellenic student societies is being formed answering the long held demand for an official Greek student voice. After the conference several Hellenic Societies from different Universities have expressed their willingness to join the Union.

A debate discussion on the mapping of the Greek foreign policy took place during the second day of the conference. The following expressed their views on:

Mr. Psycharis (Greek Embassy) "Greek foreign policy in the Aegian" Dr. Clogg, (Oxford University) " Greek Turkish relations" Dr. Kazamias (Bradford University) " Greece and the Balkans" Dr. Stavranidis ( Leeds University) " The Cyprus issue"

The official web page of the Union E.E.F.ME.B., includes the member list, the constitution, the aims and objectives, and an overview on the conference. The web page is: (http://www.webleicester.co.uk/customer/mexas). (on-line from 25/05) http://www.greece.org/eefkmeb/: new site as of 24/5/97.
