  • [01] K. Papoulias Meets GSEE Presidium

    Wednesday, 01 December 2010 13:00

"I think its time rulers should ask the wealthy to open their wallets to contribute. This would be a fair move because it seems that the wealthy are stingy", said the President of the Republic referring to the financial crisis during his meeting with GSEE president Yiannis Panagopoulos and members of the confederation's administration board. On his part, Mr. Panagopoulos said: "we realize the difficult for the country circumstances. But we believe that socially unfair measures were taken and are being taken and there is unfair distribution of burdens. And the wealthy both are not paying but also making up theories to avoid their responsibility and share in dealing with the financial crisis".

Furthermore, Mr. Papoulias spoke of "big and unbearable pain on ones hardly hit by the financial crisis. There is certainly a red line below which one can not further press the workers' class".

Referring to the role of the union's movement Mr. Papoulias said: "You are giving a battle, we are all giving a battle and we all understand that these difficult circumstances can be overcome only with battles, battles within the frame of democracy and social cohesion. I wish and hope our battles bring a positive result".

    [02] Monicceli Committed Suicide

    Wednesday, 01 December 2010 09:57

Mario Monicelli, a director consider one of the masters of Italian style comedy, died on 29, November, 2010 at the age of 95 after jumping from a fifth-floor window of the San Giovanni hospital in Rome, where he was admitted a few days earlier for prostate cancer. He was born on May, 15, 1915 in Viareggio, Tuscany, and attended studies at the local lyceum.

Monicelli's career include some of the masterpieces of Italian cinema. "My Friends", featuring Ugo Togniazzi and Philippe Noiret was one of the most successful films in Italy and confirmed Monicelli's skill in mixing humour, irony and bitter feelings.

Monicelli collaborated with the most important Italian actors of the 20th century. "Big Deal on Madonna Street" (1958), featuring Vitorio Gasman, Marcelo Mastroyianni and Claudia Cardinale, is probably the first true Italian style comedy he produced. "The Great War" is regarded as his finest work for which Monicelli was awarded a Golden Lion in the Venice Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination for the best foreign film. The film, featuring Vitorio Gassman and the other superstar of Italian comedy, Alberto Sordi excelled in the absence of rhetorical accents. The film is about two young Italians doing their best to avoid action during the First World War.

Monicelli worked also for television and theatre, occasionally as an actor, and produced some 65 feature films.
