[01] Netanyahu in Athens

Israeli Prime-minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Athens shortly after noon on Monday. He is paying a two-day official visit to Greece in return to Greek Premier's visit to Israel in July. The two premiers will meet at the Maximos Mansion -government headquarters- at 17:30 and their talks will center on Greece-Israel bilateral relations.

Mr. Netaniahu was received at the Athens international airport by undersecretary for Culture and Tourism George Nikitiadis. The Israeli Prime-minister, who is staying at a central hotel in Athens, will meet with the Greek Prime-minister at 17:30.

In the evening the Israeli Premier will visit the Acropolis and next will attend dinner hosted y Mr. Papandreou.

Tomorrow morning Mr. Netanyahu will meet with the main opposition leader Antonis Samaras and next will visit the island of Poros accompanied by the Prime-minister.

[02] Fires Raging in Greece -Europe

Wildfires are raging in many parts of Greece as well as in many parts of Europe while firefighters are giving a titanic battle to deal with the situation.

A total of 70 fires have broken out on Monday in several parts of Greece. However, the fires in Kalloni, on the island of Mytilini and Lehaina in Elia have been brought under control after hard efforts by firefighters and aircraft water bombers. The fire on the island of Kythira burning low ground and the fire in Filiates in Thesprotia burning forest land on high ground that broke out on Saturday, have abated. Firefighters and airtankers are cooperating in strong efforts to bring the fires under control. Fire fighters have brought the fire on the island of Zante under control

In Europe

Fires are raging in Spain and Portugal . Two firefighters were killed in Galicia forest fires where blazes charred some 2.000 acres of forest land. Fires in Mucia and Camarina were brought under control on Monday morning while other three fires were extinguished after burning some 750 acres of land. Another fire near Corunia burned over 1.000 acres . A fresh fire broke out in the same region on Monday while the army is participating in fire extinguishing efforts.

In Portugal more than 14 wildfires are raging in the north part of the country. Authorities are most concerned about blazes in Peneda Geres national park , 100km northeast of the city of Porto, where fire fighters are giving a tough battle. Another fire has destroyed 95% of Fungal Ecology park. In Portugal 14.000 fires have been recorded this year equivalent to the fires in the last three years.

[03] Murderer of Greek Origin Himara Resident Surrendered

Albanian citizen Ilir Mouka surrendered to Avlona police authorities. He was wanted for the murder of Greek origin Aristotelis Gumas, 37yo resident of Himara. Albanian News Agency ATA, quoting police sources, say Ilir Mouca surrendered to face charges against him. He is the alleged driver of the car that killed Aristotelis Gumas. An international arrest warrant has been issued against the culprits of the murder while a $20.000 reward is offered for information.

[04] Falling Pine-tree Hit 20 People

Two young girls -15yo and 16yo were hit by a falling pine-tree while they were attending an event on Sunday, in Kiato on the occasion of Assumption of Virgin Mary. The two girls were transferred to Nikaia hospital with injuries in the spinal cord. A firefighter was also admitted to Korinthos hospital. The falling tree slightly injured seventeen people.

An outdoors party held in Kiato on the occasion of Assumption of Virgin Mary could have turned into a tragedy. Over 2.000 people were attending the event, where a known singer was invited to sing. Suddenly the trunk of a 3.4m high pine-tree broke and fell on the people attending the event shortly after 02:00.

The party was interrupted and people was running to save themselves. Some people removed the branches from the ones hit by the fallen tree and drove them to hospital.

A total of 20 people were injured but the two young girls were the most seriously injured and one of them underwent surgery in spinal cord.

[05] High Temperatures-Fires Abating

Temperatures will approach 41C in some regions. Weather forecasters report a slight drop in temperature in the west and north parts of the country but high temperatures will stay all week . Significant drop in temperatures is expected at the weekend. In the meantime, high temperatures and strong winds increase risk of fires. Civil Protection General Secretariat has issued high risk level " red" for Attika, Eboia, Lesbos, Hios, Samos, Crete. In the meantime fires in Kythira, Filiatra and Zante are abating. Fires in Amfilohia, Ierapetra and Thesprotia have been brought under control.
