Finance Minister George Papakonstantinou will have several meetings with the economic staff next week to seek ways to track tax evaders and ones who hide incomes. Competent undersecretary Filippos Sahinidis , in an interview, said hunting of tax evasion will bring some 5 billion euros to the state's funds.

    New Round of Confiscations

A new round of confiscations for debtors of expired debts and reconfirmed penalties starts in September. In the meantime Internal Revenue agents (SDOE) unabatedly continue nationawide inspections while Finance Ministry services cross-examine tax declarations. They have already found 500 holders of bank accounts in Switzerland, Britain and Cyprus.

"Following detailed inspections SDOE has already imposed penalties mounting to 2.5 billion euros in the first half of the year. We believe sum of penalties will approach 5 billion euros till the end of the year", said Finance undersecretary Filippos Sahinidis in an interview with "Kyriakatiki Eleftherotypia"

The aim of the economic staff is restoration of taxation justice. A new group of Internal Revenue agents will be set up to sweep up provocative tax evasion such as ones who own villas, yachts and declare low income. Inspections will target the following groups:

    High income groups

    Large property owners

    Tax payers with expired debts

    off-shore companies

businesses that do not pay retained VAT
