[01] D. Bitsas Reelected SYN Party Secretary

Dimitris Bitsas was re-elected secretary of SYN party Central Political Committee with 85 votes in favour and 40 blank as well as 19 members of the new Political Secretariat. The Left Unity won 10 seats, the Left Wave 6 seats and Protoboulia 2010 3 seats. In the meantime, SYN president Alexis Tsipras blamed the members of the renewal wing, who withdrew from the party, for placing red lines against fictional dangers and they would be soon judged for their practices.

Alexis Tsipras raised a question of moral order speaking of "alteration of Greek people willingness", adding, however, "SYN party will not be consumed in degeneration war against them as the enemy is on the opposite side, that is the policy leading to poverty and insecurity".

Mr. Tsipras announced clear talks in the coming period to re-establish SYRIZA under new foundations.

[02] G. Papandreou: " Talks of Bancruptcy Groundless"

Prime-minister George Papandreou categorically rejected scenarios about Greece's bankruptcy and exit from the euro region during his speech at a meeting of the Institute of International Finance (IIF), a lobby group of the world's top bankers. Mr. Papandreou appeared certain that the deficit would be reduced by 5.5% and assured that Greece would pay its debts. The international crisis could become an opportunity for Greece's economy said the Prime-minister and underlined that he would do whatever was necessary to save the country even sacrificing his own political future.

Athens Restores its Credibility

"Athens no longer at risk of bankruptcy" is the title of Austrian newspaper "Der Standard" hosting interview with George Papandreou who calls on Europe to keep back from crushing policies and invest on its growth. Furthermore he proposed taxation of financial transactions and issue of Eurobond to increase EU revenues.

Mr. Papandreou appeared certain that the deficit would be reduced by 5.5% and assured that Greece would pay its debts, adding Greek banks are strong and play a significant role in the economies of countries in the broader region. Greek Prime-minister and Austrian Chancellor are to make coordinated moves and take common initiatives for more efficient financial supervisory framework and growth of Europe.

Trichet Optimistic

European Central Bank president Jean Claude Trichet expressed optimism about developments in Greece saying that there were indications of strict implementation of the budget despite the painful recession. On his part the chief executive of Germany's Deutsche Bank, Josef Ackermann said he was convinced Greece would achieve its targets.

European Commissioner for Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn said Greece's fiscal program was in the right direction, adding that Brussels and Athens have reached agreement on the social security system reform.

On his part, Finance Minister George Papakonstantinou reassured the Parliament that the two next installments of the rescue mechanism have been secured and underlined that the stability program was in the right direction.

[03] First Heat Wave Under Way

Temperatures are rising in all parts of the country with the maximum temperature in the middle of the week touching 40C. Thousands of Athenians as well as residents of urban centers have escaped from cities to spend the day in near beaches.

Meteorological Service has forecast rise in temperatures in the next days with maximum temperature in the middle of the week touching 38C -39C in some parts of the country.

On Saturday, Athens saw 35C, Thessaloniki 33C, Thessalia 36C. On Sunday, the mercury will hit 36C in Athens, 35C in Thessaloniki, 37C in Thessalia. In the continental shelf showers or thunderstorms would pop up in the afternoon increasing humidity level.

Temperatures will remain high on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, in Athens 37C and in Thessaloniki 36C but will start gradually dropping from Thursday.
