  • [01] Final Countdown for Vatopedi Case

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 19:24

The final countdown for the Vatopedi scandal has started. According to information, the ruling party of PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) is considering holding former Conservative ministers Theodoros Roussopoulos, Evangelos Basiakos, Petros Doukas, Alexandros Kontos and probably Giorgos Voulgarkis politically responsible for the case. Antonis Bezas, Kostas Kiltides and Apostolos Fotiades are also likely to be blamed. The committee of inquiry investigating the case was given a week to submit its report.

LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) deputy Athanasios Plevris suggested former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis be called to testify. His proposal, though, was not put to vote. PASOK deputy Nikos Zoides commented that although his party did not bring up the issue, it expected Karamanlis to undertake the initiative to make at least a statement since his political office was implicated in the case.

SYRIZA (Coalition of the Radical Left) argued that a deposition by Karamanlis would be necessary if political responsibilities came up, while KKE (Greek Communist Party)said it would not mind if the issue was put to vote.

The main opposition New Democracy party stressed that calling the former prime minister to testify could mean something if the involvement of his political office could be documented.

"The inquiry committee on the Vatopedi case puts the stamina of the political system to test. Some have already proved themselves to be coward. Some others just want to play retaliation games. We, on the other hand, want the truth. Some are afraid of it. We will keep insisting till the end," said LAOS head Giorgos Karatzaferis.
