Earth Hour is an initiative that aims to inspire Households and businesses to take action on climate change by turning their lights off. The event will take place on Saturday, 27 March, 2010, at 8.30pm. Last year Greece came second place losinglast minute first place to the Philippines. This year Greece is in third place worldwide among countries participating in the global event. ERT is official sponsor.

Earth Hour was born here in Sydney, Australia in 2007 as a WWF campaign calling Sydney residents to turn off lights for an hour in the evening to show the world that we have the power to take action against global warming. WWF is a global network of people, scientists and volunteers in more than 100 countries.

In the first event two million households and companies took part.

Their action soon became one of the biggest initiatives to take action against global warming.

Only one year after, 50 million people around the planet took part in Earth Hour 2008 by switching off their lights for an hour recognizing the contribution individuals can make in tackling climate change.

In 2009 hundreds of million people participated in the biggest world action against global warming. Over 4.000 cities in 88 countries switched off lights last year with Greece playing a leading role.

    Greece Third Place Worldwide

Greece is third place among 115 countries participating in the global event with 247 municipalities, communities and prefectures submitting electronically their intention to switch off lights for an hour in renowned monuments.

Millions of homes around the world are geared up to observe the "Earth Hour 2010" on Saturday, March 27, 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in order to conserve energy and pay attention. Earth Hour reflects the conviction of people around the world that climate change is real and we need to do something about it.
