[01] Financial Crisis Requires Unity and Strong Governance

Addressing the crisis requires strong governance and national unity, underlined SEV (Hellenic Federation of Enterprises) head Dimitris Daskalopoulos following his meeting with Conservative leader Antonis Samaras. The two men focused on matters pertaining to the problems plaguing the Greek economy.

In his statements, the SEV head called for structural changes and called on all social partners and political parties to rally around national unity.

Daskalopoulos reminded that enterprises were the first to pay the emergency contribution amounting to 1 billion euros. He then went on to add that the private sector can guarantee paying both the 13th and 14th salary, contrary to the ailing public sector which went bankrupt.

Speaking on NET radio station, SEV President Dimitris Daskalopoulos stressed that "we have to determine how we want Greece to be in the coming years. The Greek society has potentials. Red tape blocks development. Businessmen spend a lot of time for their everyday tasks."

ND deputy and section head for development Kostis Hatzidakis, on his part, reiterated that the Conservative New Democracy party always gave priority to the national interests. He then called for immediate growth measures, noting that any delay equals to a gunshot in the heart of the Greek economy.

Hatzidakis voiced his concern over the lack of any growth dimension, as he said, in the government's measures and reiterated that the main opposition party submitted specific proposals.

Asked on the profiteering phenomena in the fuel market, Hatzidakis stressed that inspections should be intensified. "The government has the tools. All it takes is to use them," said he.

[02] Manhunt to Track Down Second Suspect Continues

Authorities in Greece are searching for clues that could lead them to Labros Fountas' contacts with people implicated in domestic terrorism. Labros Fountas was killed in a clash with police. The anti-terrorist squad is examining a mobile phone and a personal computer found in the victim's apartment. Ballistic tests, though, showed that his gun had never been used in other crimes. Police is considering whether the two gunmen were plotting a terrorist hit and has launched a manhunt to track down the second individual, who, according to information, was injured during the shootout.

Call for Information

Police released new footage of the 35-year-old male who was killed in a dawn shootout with police, urging anyone who may know something regarding his whereabouts to contact the anti-terrorist squad.

Police hope that any information could lead them to some hideout or to people Labros Fountas knew.

The search so far has yielded evidence implicating him in terrorist attacks. However, anti-terrorist squad officials believe that his effort to steal a car of low value has less to do with common crime and more with the plotting of a terrorist hit. Besides, similar practices are followed by Revolutionary Struggle, a Greek urban guerrilla group.
