  • [01] ND: Inquiry Committee to Look into Fiscal Data since 1981

    Friday, 26 February 2010 13:41

The ND party today submitted to the Speaker of the House proposal for the setting up of Inquiry Committee to look into the state finances and their credibility from 1981 to present. ND has accused the ruling PASOK party of laxity and misleading Greek people. The proposal is signed by the members of ND parliamentary group, first signature is its leader's Antonis Samaras and second by former prime-minister Kostas Karamanlis.

The ND blames PASOK for persistence to set up an "ostensible" Inquiry Committee and stresses that its proposal is targeted to consolidate and formulate firm and healthy rules for the future and bring up the real causes -since 1981 and country's entry into EC- that led Greece's economy into the present situation.

The ND party also maintains that PASOK's proposal limiting investigation to 2004 - October 2009 period proves that the government neither intends to consolidate transparency in economy nor the establishment of effective rules to ensure the country's credibility. "They do not intend to reveal but to obfuscate and hide the truth".

Specifically, the ND stresses that the government and PASOK try: "to hush up the fact that they lied to Greek people and gave promises which they knew they could not materialize although according to their admission they knew the whole truth about the economic situation before the elections.

They also want to cover up their big responsibilities for not having taken for 4 months any sufficient and effective measures to deal with the financial crisis despite strict instructions by EU officials that have had a negative impact on development, employment and cost of borrowing.

    The Skepticism of the Proposal

"Since the Prime-minister and the Government insist on a spiteful proposal and since the truth could not be chopped, obfuscated and covered up, we propose an Inquiry Committee (for 1981-2010 period) to carry out an in depth investigation that will reveal the true data regarding course and quality of state finances as well as the general handling in fiscal management by all governments during this period".

The Inquiry Committee proposed by PASOK "can not contribute to the restoration of crucial economic issues the country and the Greek people are facing but on the contrary through PASOK practices it can damage the domestic national front and worsen the country's picture abroad".
