[01] Farmers Insist on their Protests

Farmers erect new road blocks throughout Greece's national and regional road network, following their refusal to join the talks the Agricultural Minister will host Monday at Zappeion. The issue tops the informal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister, while following the reactions over the road blocks, opposition leader Antonis Samaras, who met with the farmers' unions, expressed his objections to the road blocks.

Escalating their protests throughout Greece, farmers refused to join the dialogue the Agricultural Minister is to host on Monday at Zappeion.

Underlining that not until all their grievances are met will they join the talks, the farmers are erecting new road blocks, causing major inconvenience to travellers.

Bulgarian Consul Visits Promahonas Border Crossing

More tractors were added Wednesday to the road blocks at the Promahonas border crossing, which remains closed for three days in a raw.

Bulgarian consul general in Thessaloniki Plamen Ivanov visited Wednesday the border crossing, with a view to have the crossing opened.

His efforts fell through and said that his country will resort to the EU so that his country will be compensated.

An EU top official confirmed that the President of the European Commission got a letter from the Bulgarian Prime Minister, who protested the blockade of the Greek-Bulgarian border by the Greek farmers.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman Grigoris Delavekouras hoped that the problem will be addressed as soon as possible. News item: 32193

[02] Trial on Grigoropoulos' Killing Adjourned

The trial of the two special guards charged with the killing of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in December 2008 was adjourned for Friday 22 January. Both sides, that of the claimant and that of the defendant, requested the above decision. The defendant's lawyer Alexis Kougias said that one of his partners could not attend the trial as he had other professional responsibilities.

The victim's mother, on the other hand, said she could not attend the trial because her mother was admitted to hospital and needed to be there for her. News item: 32174

[03] Raggoussis-Guterrez Meeting

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres met Wednesday with Greek Interior Minister Giannis Raggoussis and offered his full backing to the Greek government's initiative to give voting and nationality rights to migrants living legally in Greece for years. Raggoussis reiterated the government's will to have migrants equally integrated in the Greek society. The prerequisite of a five-year-long legal stay for migrants' children to get the Greek nationality is what happens worldwide, noted he, citing Portugal, where, as he said, the naturalization campaign contributed to the integration of the migrants and to social cohesion.

On Tuesday, Guterrez met with the Greek Premier and pledged an UN aid to help Greece address the immigration problem.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees also held talks with Civil Protection Minister Mihalis Chrysohoides, Deputy Health Minister Fofi Gennimata and the Greek Ombudsman Giorgos Kminis.
