[01] Thessaloniki Police Averted Suicide of Young Girl

Thessaloniki Police Electronic Crime department said it averted suicide of a young girl who had posted her intention to commit suicide on the Internet.

The young girl, who lives in Thessaloniki posted a message on a chat page in the Internet announcing her plan to commit suicide for personal reasons. Police authorities informed her parents that the girl needed psychological support.

[02] Premier for Winter Sales

Having started on Friday, winter sales will run through 27 February. Shops owners hope the sales will give a boost to the market, while the Athens Traders Association urges its members to keep on both the old and the new reduced prices.

The Union of Consumers for Quality of Life (EKPOIZO), on the other hand, noted: "We hope the sales will be real to the benefit of both the consumers and the traders, who have to earn the consumers' trust."

[03] Nationwide Mobilizations of Farmers

Farmers from Serres and Kavala have erected first barricades on Egnatia road while farmers from 19 prefectures nationwide have planned to drive to main points of national roads at 14:00, not ruling out road blocks. In the meantime, Agriculture Minister Katerina Baltezis is visiting Larissa today Friday to meet with Prefecture Administration officials and farmers representatives to discuss issues of their concern. Mrs. Baltezis is to give press interview 18:00.

On the grounds of farmers mobilizations, Bulgaria has warned to refer to European Commission in order to achieve unhampered road access of Bulgarian lorries.

[04] Thermes-Zlatograd Road Inaugurated

The cross-border Thermo- Zlatograd road was inaugurated Thursday at the Greek-Bulgarian border by Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou and his Bulgarian counterpart Boiko Borissov. George Papandreou stressed, "The new road symbolizes the policy for a new Europe," and underlined, "We are knocking walls down and paving new roads of cooperation, peace and development." Borissov, on his part, spoke of a friendship that unites the efforts for joint ventures. Then, the two Premiers went to Zlatograd where they held private talks. Borissov hosted a banquet in honour of George Papandreou and the members of the Greek delegation. Papandreou is escorted by Deputy Defence Minister Dimitris Droutsas and deputy Minister Giorgos Petalotis, Giannis Magriotis and Markos Bolaris.

"This new road symbolizes the fact that the new Europe we are shaping requires us to knock down the walls that had isolated us and pave new roads of cooperation, peace, friendship and development. Underlining this year's anniversary for the 130 years of diplomatic affairs between Greece and Bulgaria, George Papandreou said that yet another cross-border road will be inaugurated in the area of Kyprinos, near the Greek city of Komotini.

"The new road also symbolizes the need for a joint voice of all the Balkan people to promote our interests in the new EU by welcoming the rest Balkan nations in the European family by 2014," stressed the Greek Prime Minister.

"I met with George Papandreou, one of the most respectful politicians within the EU, a few months ago and although we belong to the two different major political families in the EU, we agreed to cooperate to the benefit of our two people. Greece and Bulgaria together can join their forces in the joint infrastructure and help the rest Balkan nations so that they can join the EU, because this is the only way to have prosperity and peace in the region. Today's opening ceremony proved that there had been communication and cooperation," claimed the Bulgarian Prime Minister.
