  • [01] Iran Reveals Second Enrichment Plant

Last Updated on Friday, 25 September 2009 19:17

Iran has revealed the operation of a second uranium enrichment plant in a letter to International Atomic Energy Agency, one day after the UN Security Council anti-nuclear resolution and overall efforts to stop the spread and use of nuclear weapons.

Tehran made the announcement earlier this week in a letter to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohammed ElBaradei. Iran has previously acknowledged it has one enrichment plant at Natanz, which IAEA inspectors are monitoring.

The US, UK and France are set to accuse Iran of concealing the plant later on Friday, media reports say. They and other Western nations have long feared that Iran is planning to develop an atomic weapon.

Tehran has always insisted its programme is for peaceful means. Iran is supposed to have stopped all enrichment under threat of sanctions from the UN Security Council.

The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution calling for nuclear disarmament on Thursday in a session chaired by US President Barack Obama. The resolution calls for further efforts to stop the spread of nuclear arms, to boost disarmament. The historic resolution we just adopted enshrines our shared commitment to the goal of a world without nuclear weapons, US President told the Security Council after the resolution was adopted

    Global Disarmament

The US-drafted UN Resolution 1887 on non-proliferation and disarmament passed unanimously today at the Security Council meeting chaired by President Obama calls on countries to sign and ratify the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It also calls on them to create additional deterrence for withdrawal from the treaty.

While backing the right of nations to peaceful use of nuclear energy, the resolution calls for stronger safeguards to reduce the likelihood that peaceful nuclear programs can be diverted to a weapons program.

Shortly after adoption of the resolution Barrack Obama said: He said the next 12 months would be "absolutely critical in determining whether this resolution and our overall efforts to stop the spread and use of nuclear weapons are successful".

It is the 5th time the UN Security Council has met at country leaders' level since its foundation and the first time a US president had chaired a Security Council summit.
