  • [01] Obama- Netanyahu- Abbas Joint Meeting

Last Updated on Sunday, 20 September 2009 14:54

U.S. President Barack Obama will hold a joint meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday to try to restart peace talks between the two sides, the White House said. Obama, who will be in NY next week for the U.N. General Assembly, will meet with each leader separately before convening a joint session with them.

The meeting would continue U.S. efforts to "lay the groundwork for renewed negotiations and creation of a positive context for those negotiations so that they can succeed" the announcement says. "It is another sign of the president's deep commitment to comprehensive peace that he wants to personally engage at this juncture," Mitchell said in the White House statement.

U.S. Special Envoy George Mitchell has recently ended a week of shuttle diplomacy in Jerusalem and Arab states. He said the United States was continuing efforts to "encourage all sides to take responsibility for peace and to create a positive context for the resumption of negotiations."

Netanyahu's office said in a statement the Israeli leader had pushed forward his departure for New York to Monday from Wednesday for the purpose of meeting with Obama and Abbas. "Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomes the United States' invitation for talks with President Barack Obama and for a trilateral meeting with President Obama and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas," the statement said.

[02] âVictory Lies on ND Votersâ

Last Updated on Sunday, 20 September 2009 15:39

Greece is in the most crucial period after the fall of the military junta and the ND government has selected the road of responsibility, clearly informing the people on the difficult decisions that should be taken said Prime-minister, Kostas Karamanlis during his speech at an open rally in the city of Yiannena central square. The Prime-minister continues his pre-election campaign with speech at an open rally in Larissa at 19:30 while he will give a press interview to state television channel NET at 21:15. Speaking to newspaper âApogevmatiniâ, K. Karamanlis made clear that he would keep election of President of the Republic out of petty politics and repeated that no vote should be wasted in October, 4 elections.

In his speech delivered to an open rally in the city of Yiannena, Prime-minister K. Karamanlis stressed that people should know the truth as there is no room for weasel words and pleasant recipes. PASOK promises for all and everything are fake.

    K. Karamanlis blamed PASOK for pledging pay hikes and wondered where he was to find 20 billion euros he would need in 2 or three years. He underlined that future generations would pay for the huge cost of loans he was talking about. He maintained that the ND party does not gamble the future of the country and has an integrated plan to exit the country from the financial crisis.

Mr. Karamanlis referred to the measures the government has taken so far to deal with the financial crisis, adding that more measures are necessary. PASOK, he said, sacrifices everything on the partisanship altar. PASOK pleasant words hide risks while the ND gives a battle for the country's interests.

The Prime-minister also referred to the projects constructed and under construction in Epirus, with top one the Egnatia Road that takes Epirus out of its past geographical isolation turning it to an energy hub. Environment and Public Works Ministry projects alone mount to 3 billion euros.

He added that 1100 projects have been included in Epirus Regional Program. All schools in Epirus have computer rooms and internet access while hospitals and health services have been significantly upgraded. Mr. Karamanlis also referred to bilateral agreements with Albania which strengthen Greek minority in the neighbouring country.

[03] Terms Agreed on Six Leaders Debate

Political parties and journalists reached agreement on the terms of the six political leaders debate which will be held on Monday , at 20:00 and will be aired by all television channels. The duel debate between K. Karamanlis and G. Papandreou will be held on Tuesday.

Debate on Monday despite Initial Objections

After marathon negotiations, political parties and journalists agreed on the terms of the six political leaders debate which will be held at the state television channel ERT, on Monday, at 20:00.

Government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros proposed a new framework which in general satisfied journalists in the panel although there have some reservations.

Increase of time from 20 to 30 seconds to pose question and permission for posing clarification question to each political leader were the two major elements that convinced journalists to agree to participate in the panel.

Opposition parties saw changes positively, keeping, however, some objections.

The ND and PASOK parties have also officially agreed on Karamanlis-Papandreou debate to be held on Tuesday September, 22.
