[02] Iran Won't Talk Nuclear Issues

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad got yet another chance to declare his nation's intentions on nuclear issues, while welcoming the new British ambassador to Tehran, Simon Gass. "Having peaceful nuclear technology is Iran's lawful and definite right and Iranians will not negotiate with anyone over their undeniable rights," said Ahmadinejad.

In the meantime, the Turkish Foreign Minister, who is on a two-day visit in Iran, expressed Turkey's intention to host the summit between Iran and the six world powers, the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany.

A tornado swept through Turkey's southern coastal resort of Alanya, while the country's northwest part is still suffering from a spate of bad weather. So far, the deadly floods have claimed 33 lives. In Kazakhstan, 38 people were killed when fire broke out at a clinic for drug addicts. The causes of the accident remain sketchy. In Romania, a huge fire ravaged a rubber tyre and chemical factory.

[04] The Day After Reveals Extensive Damage in Evia Island

The day after the torrential rain hit the Aegean island of Evia revealed the incalculable damage caused in homes, businesses, crops and in the island's key infrastructure. Several areas have been left with no electricity, with the biggest problems having been reported in the village of Mistros. According to flash estimates, more than 500 homes and the biggest part of the road network have been damaged. Socialist leader George Papandreou expressed his solidarity with the flood-hit residents.

LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) President Giorgos Karatzaferis visited Sunday morning the hit areas. He attended an emergency meeting at the municipality of Vassilikos village and gave 30,000 euros, a sum he was supposed to use for his party's pre-election campaign in the island, to the local authorities.

[05] Papandreou: âWe Have Solutions for Economyâ

At the Press conference PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) President George Papandreou gave Sunday noon on the sidelines of the Thessaloniki International Fair, he elaborated on the financial measures his party is considering taking to tackle the credit crisis if he wins the 4 October general elections. He touched on income taxation and stressed he will not impose new taxes. Papandreou ruled out increasing the VAT, underlining that the his programme will be funded by the cuts in public spending and the taxation on high incomes. Shifting his attention to the pension system, Papandreou claimed there will not no changes in the retirement age limits, underlining that the country's ailing pension system cannot be solved in a particular manner. âWe are ready and we have the solutions,â stressed George Papandreou.
