Drug combat squad dismantled an international drug trafficking gang
said the Finance Ministry Special Inspections Service. Officials of the
Drug and Weapons Combat Attika Squad located and confiscated 400
packets with cocaine weighting 447kg in the Piraeus port. This is the
largest cocaine drug quantity confiscated in Greece in a container and
one of the largest quantities in Europe.
The drugs came from Bolivia and was hidden in specially designed parts
of a container transporting aluminum scrap material. Arrested were a
Greek national, permanent resident of Belgium considered having top
role in the international gang, a Bulgarian national, who had set up a
company in Thessaloniki. A Greek customs broker was to receive part of
the cargo and two women, one of whom was coordinating custom clearance
procedures and transportation of cocaine.
Finance Minister Yiannis Papathanasiou congratulated all authorities
that contributed in the arrest of the international gang describing it
as a big achievement.
