[01] Roadside Bomb Kills 21 Civilians

A roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan killed at least 21 civilians, including women and children, riding a tractor to a wedding. The incident took place yesterday in the Garmsir district of Helmand province where roadside bombs are frequently used to attack foreign and Afghan forces. The Afghan Ministry of Defense confirmed the attack and said at least 20 people were killed.

A similar blast in neighbouring Kadahar province, on July, 17 killed 11 civilians, among them 5 children.

[02] Tonga Ferry Sinks Leaving 26 People Missing

Rescue crews are still searching for survivors of ferry that sank off Tonga capital Nuku'alofa overnight, leaving 26 people missing. The inter island ferry was carrying 79 passengers while the first boats to reach the scene pulled 53 people from life rafts, passengers and crew members. Among the missing people are women and children

Man Pulled out Dead

It sank soon after, 86km north east of Tonga capital Nuku'alofa. The weather conditions in the area are moderate facilitating search. Rescue crews pulled out the body of a man and are still searching for 26 people missing.The reasons for the sinking is still unclear.

The ferry is 34 years old while the shipping company was to replace it in 2011.

[03] KYSEA to Decide Changes in Armed Forces Leadership

Prime-minister K. Karamanlis on Thursday morning will chair an extraordinary meeting of the Goverrnment Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense( KYSEA). The Council is expected to decided on changes in the Armed Forces leadership. According to reports Ioannis Yiagos chief of Air Force general staff will replace General Dimitris Grapsaa current chief of the Armed Forces General Staff. Changes in the leadership of the Army and Air Force are also expected. Earlier, Prime-minister K.Karamanlis had a cooperation meeting with Foreign Minister D. Bakoyiannis to discuss issues of the Foreign Ministry competence.
